Appalachian State wins
at LSU to capture series
Stanford
stomps Texas, Valparaiso edges Arkansas, Fullerton nips TCU
In Baton Rouge, La., Rob Marcello allowed three
hits and one run in 8.1 innings as Appalachian State defeated
No. 8 LSU 11-1 Sunday to capture the series two games to one. Marcello (2-0) walked two and struck out four.
Tyler Zupcic had a double and triple and drove in three, while
Daniel Kassouf (3 for 4, 2B, 2 R) (pictured right) and Hector Crespo (2 for 4, 3
R) also added to the offense of the Mountaineers (4-2). ASU
scored in seven of its nine at-bats, including a pair in each of
the final three innings. Mason Katz walked twice and scored for
the Tigers (5-2). It was the first three-game series win for ASU
over an opponent from a BCS conference. It’s only other series
win over a BCS opponent was a two-game sweep of Connecticut in
1985. LSU had not been held to five or less runs in a home
series since scoring three in three games against Ole Miss in

No. 3 Stanford 15, No. 9 Texas 1
In Stanford, Calif., Stephen Piscotty knocked in
four in two at-bats in a 13-run fourth as Stanford completed a
three-game sweep of Texas at Sunken Diamond. Piscotty had a
two-run double to make it 7-1 and a two-run single to cap the
outburst at 14-1. Eric Smith went 2 for 4 with a double, two
runs and three RBI, while Kenny Diekroeger was 3 for 5 with a
double, two runs and two RBI for the Cardinal (7-0). Payton had
two hits for the Longhorns (2-5). John Hochstatter (1-0, 6.1 IP,
5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K) registered the victory. All 15 runs against
Texas were earned.
Valparaiso 10, No. 5 Arkansas 9 (10)
In Fayetteville, Ark., Tanner Vavra had a leadoff
double and scored on a two-out single by Will Hagel in the top
of the 10th as Valparaiso handed Arkansas its first loss of the
season. Vavra went 3 for 5 with a double and three runs, while
Hagel was 4 for 6 for the Crusaders (3-3). Elliott Martin
doubled and drove in three, while Steven Scoby had three hits
and two runs for Valpo. The Razorbacks (7-1) tied it in the
bottom of the ninth as Dominic Ficociello (4 for 4, 2 2B, 3 R, 1
RBI) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Vinson (2 for
4). Matt Reynolds drove in three and Jacob Morris homered for
Arkansas. The win came against the highest ranked team
Valparaiso has defeated since April 25, 2001, a 4-2 victory over
No. 1 Notre Dame in the nightcap of a doubleheader. It was also
the program’s first win against an SEC opponent. The Crusaders
are now 2-0 in extra-inning games after having not won one in
2011.
No. 20 Cal State Fullerton 11, No. 14 TCU 10
In Fullerton, Calif., Michael Lorenzen went 4 for
5 with a double, two runs and three RBI as Cal State Fullerton
outscored TCU to win the series. The Titans (3-3) erased a 3-2
deficit with a nine-run fourth. The Horned Frogs (2-4) fought
back to pull to within one, but fell short as the game was
called after eight innings due to TCU travel curfew. Keegan Dale
(3 for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) was a home run short of the cycle, while
Carlos Lopez went 3 for 5 with two RBI for Fullerton. Zac Jordan
(1 for 3, 3 RBI), Jason Coats (4 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Kyle Von
Tungeln (2 for 4, HR, 2 R) had strong days at the plate for TCU.
No. 1 Florida 5, William and Mary 3
In
Gainesville, Fla., Nolan Fontana (right) and Preston Tucker both
homered as No. 1 Florida completed the sweep of William and Mary
with a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon. The game was called with two
outs in the top of the sixth due to heavy rain and unplayable
field conditions. Michael Katz (3 for 3) had a run-scoring
single in the first for the Tribe (2-5) before Fontana’s two-run
shot in the third put the Gators (7-1) on top. W&M tied it in
the fourth on a balk, but UF went ahead in the bottom of the
frame on a two-run single by Justin Shafer (2 for 2). Tucker
went deep in the fifth to make it 5-2 before Katz homered in the
sixth to complete the scoring. Karsten Whitson (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1
R, 1 BB) was forced to leave in the first. Steven Rodriguez

No. 2 South Carolina 6, Elon 0
In Columbia, S.C., Colby Holmes and three
relievers combined on the three-hit shutout as South Carolina
completed the three-game sweep of Elon. Holmes (2-0) allowed
three hits and three walks in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts to
earn the victory. Vince Fiori (0.1 IP), Ethan Carter (2 IP, 1 K)
and Evan Beal (1 IP, 2 K) held the Phoenix (4-3) hitless the
rest of the way. L.B. Dantzler had a three-run homer in the
first and Tanner English added a two-run triple in the second as
the Gamecocks (6-0) took control early. Ryan Kinzella had two
hits for Elon.
No. 4 Texas A&M 8, Holy Cross 2
In College Station, Texas, freshman Mitchell Nau
drove in four in his first collegiate start as Texas A&M won its
series against Holy Cross. Chris Sintetos had a two-run homer in
the top of the second for the Crusaders (1-2) before the Aggies
(6-1) answered with five in the bottom of the frame. Nau sparked
the rally with a two-run double. He added sacrifice flies in the
third and eighth. Rafael Pineda (2-0, 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 8 K)
earned the victory. Alex Maldonado had two hits for Holy Cross.
No. 6 Rice 7, Dallas Baptist 3
In Houston, Michael Ratterree had a three-run
double in a four-run fifth as Rice swept a weekend series from
Dallas Baptist. The Owls are 8-0 for the first time since 2001.
The Patriots (3-4) scored single runs in the first and third
before Rice got one in the fourth and took control with four in
the fifth. Michael Fuda had two hits, including a double, and
two runs for the Owls. Taylor Wall (3-0, 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 UE, 2 K)
got the win in relief, while Tyler Duffey (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 K)
earned his first save. Ronnie Mitchell went 2 for 3 with a
triple, one run and one RBI for DBU.
No. 7 North Carolina 3, Wright State 0
In Chapel Hill, N.C., R.C. Orlan pitched four
hitless innings of relief as North Carolina swept the three-game
set from Wright State. The Tar Heels (5-1) recorded their second
consecutive shutout and outscored the Raiders (1-5) 34-3. Orlan
(2-0) did not walk a batter and struck out three. Michael Morin
had two hits and two strikeouts in the ninth for his first save.
UNC scored two in the third and one in the fifth. Tom Zengel
went 2 for 3 with two runs for the Heels. Corey Davis and Zach
Tanner both went 2 for 4 for Wright State, which outhit UNC 8-7.
No. 10 Georgia Tech 13, Ohio State 4
In Atlanta, Jake Davies and the Georgia Tech
offense jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in
winning the series against visiting Ohio State. The Yellow
Jackets (6-2) scored three in the first and third innings and
six in the bottom of the fifth to bury the Buckeyes (3-3).
Davies (3 for 4, 3 R, 4 RBI, HR) led the way for the Yellow
Jackets but teammates Sam Dove (3 for 3, R, RBI), Daniel Palka
(2 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Kyle Wren (2 for 2, 2 R, 3 BB) also
joined in on the hit parade. Kirby Pellant and Joe Ciamacco both
went 2 for 4 for Ohio State. Dusty Isaacs (2-0, 5.2 IP, 5 H 3
ER, 3 BB, 3 K) picked up his second win for Georgia Tech.
No. 11 Florida State 2, FIU 1
In Tallahassee, Fla., James Ramsey hit his third
home run to lead Florida State past FIU in the rubber match of
the weekend series. The solo shot for Ramsey (2 for 3, BB) came
in the bottom of the fourth and put the Seminoles (6-1) up 1-0. FSU
added another run in the seventh. Pablo Bermudez, Tyler James
Shantz and Mike Martinez all had two hits for the Golden
Panthers (1-5). Peter Miller picked up his first win, going five
innings and allowing only one hit, while walking five and
striking out four for the Seminoles.
No. 12 Miami (Fla.) 12, Albany 5
In Coral Gables, Fla., Rony Rodriguez doubled
twice and knocked in two as Miami completed a three-game sweep
of Albany. The Great Danes (0-3) scored three in the top of the
eighth to pull to within one at 6-5 before the Hurricanes (7-0)
erupted for six in the bottom of the frame. The game was called
after eight innings due to travel curfew. Tyler Palmer (1 for 4,
3 R, 3 RBI), Dale Carey (3 for 3, 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Michael
Broad (2 for 4, 2B, 3 RBI) all contributed to the offense for
Miami. Pete DiResta (3 for 4) homered twice for Albany.
No. 13 Georgia 3, Winthrop 0
In Athens, Ga., Taylor Hicks and two relievers
combined on the three-hit shutout as Georgia swept its series
with Winthrop. Hicks (2-0) gave up two hits in six innings with
six strikeouts. Ross Ripple fanned one in a hitless seventh
before Blake Dieterich allowed one hit and one walk over the
final two innings to earn his second save. The Bulldogs (7-0)
scored one in the third and two in the sixth. Curt Powell went 2
for 2 with one RBI, while Hunter Cole homered for Georgia. Matt
Lobacz doubled for the Eagles (0-7).
No. 16 Clemson 9, Maine 6
In Clemson S.C., Phil Pohl delivered a two-run
double in a five-run sixth to help Clemson overcome a 6-0
deficit and take the lead over Maine. The Black Bears (1-2)
scored six runs through the first four innings thanks to some
shoddy defensive work by the Tigers (4-2), who committed a total
of five errors on the day. However, Clemson responded with two
runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth before erupting for
five in the sixth to take the lead for good. The double by Pohl
(2 for 5, 2 R) immediately followed a Steve Wilkerson (4 for 5,
3 R, 2 RBI) double that had tied the game at 6. Richie Shaffer
also had a solid day offensively for Clemson, going 2 for 4 with
a homer. Colin Gay (3 for 5, R) and Fran Whitten (2 for 4, RBI,
BB) led the way for Maine in a losing effort.
No. 17 Oklahoma 8, Hartford 3
In Norman, Okla., Steven Okert pitched eight
strong innings to pick up his first win and helped Oklahoma
complete a sweep of Hartford. It was the 600th career
victory for head coach Sunny Golloway. Okert (1-0, 8 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 2 BB,
9 K), who threw 101 pitches, was buoyed by an Oklahoma offense
that somehow scored eight runs despite only recording two hits.
The Sooners (4-2) were helped greatly by the Hartford pitching
staff, which allowed 12 walks, and defense, which committed
three costly errors. Hunter Lockwood had one of the Sooners’
hits, a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Brady Sheetz
went 3 for 4, while Trey Stover and James Alfonso had two hits
for Hartford (0-3).
No. 18 Oregon State 13, Kansas State 5
In San Diego, Danny Hayes had a grand slam as
Oregon State powered past Kansas State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Jake Rodriguez (2 for 4, 2R) and Michael Conforto (1 for 4, 2 R,
2 RBI) also went deep for the Beavers (5-3). OSU scored in four
of the first six innings, including four in the second and six
in the sixth. Jake Brown went 2 for 2 with two walks and two
runs, while Wade Hinkle went 2 for 5 with two RBI for the
Wildcats (3-4). Mike Kindel also went deep for KSU. Matt Boyd
(2-0, 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) registered the win.
Oregon 7, No. 19 Vanderbilt 6
In Nashville, Tenn., Aaron Jones had a two-run
double in a four-run sixth as Oregon completed a three-game
sweep at Vanderbilt. Aaron Payne went 3 for 4 with a double, two
runs and one RBI, while Scott Heinman went 2 for 3 with a home
run as the Ducks (7-1) extended their win streak to seven.
Connor Castellano went 2 for 3 with a double, two walks and two
RBI. Brando Tessar (2-0, 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) was
the starter and winner, while Jimmie Sherfy (2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5
BB, 4 K) picked up his second save.
Arizona State 11, UC Riverside 2
In Tempe, Ariz., Joey DeMichele went 3 for 4 with
a double, a homer, two runs and four RBI as Arizona State won
the series against UC Riverside. It was the 100th win for Tim
Esmay, head coach of the Sun Devils (5-1). Kasey Coffman went 3
for 3 with a double and three runs for ASU. Devyn Bolasky and
Vince Gonzalez both had two hits and one RBI for the Highlanders
(3-4). Trevor Williams (2-0, 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K) earned
the win.
UCLA 8, Baylor 6
In Los Angeles, Cody Regis had a two-run double
in a four-run eighth as UCLA turned a two-run deficit into a
two-run lead in winning its series with Baylor at Steele Field
at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bears (6-2) scored one in the
top of the eighth to take a 6-4 advantage before the outburst by
the Bruins (4-3) in the bottom of the frame. Pat Valaika went 3
for 4 with four RBI and finished a home run short of the cycle
for the home team. Max Muncy (2 for 4, 3 R, 3 RBI) homered twice
and Logan Vick (2 for 5) also went deep for Baylor.
Texas State 6, Houston 0
In Houston, Kyle Finnegan and two relievers
combined on the five-hit shutout as Texas State won its series
at Houston. Finnegan (2-0) allowed five hits and three walks in
six innings with four strikeouts. Louis Head tossed two hitless
innings before Jeff McVaney worked a perfect ninth with one
strikeout to secure the win. The game was scoreless through five
before the Bobcats (4-3) put up three in the sixth, one in the
eighth and two in the ninth. Ben McElroy and Brooks Orton both
had two hits and two RBI for Texas State. Chase Jensen went 1
for 3 with a walk for the Cougars (4-3).
Maryland 2, East Carolina 1
In Greenville, N.C., Alfredo Rodriguez delivered
a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth to carry Maryland
past East Carolina in the final game of the Keith LeClair
Classic. The Terps (5-1) went 3-0 in the tourney, with wins over
Western Carolina, Purdue, and the host Pirates (5-2), without
allowing an earned run. Maryland is off to its best start since
1987. Charlie White and Ryan Holland both had two hits for the
Terps. Brett Harman (5 IP, 5 H, 1 UE, 2 BB, 4 K) gave Maryland a
solid start. Korey Wacker (1-0) allowed a walk in the eighth in
picking up the win, while Jimmy Reed worked a hitless ninth to
record his third save. Tim Younger was 1 for 1 with two walks
and a run for ECU.
Purdue 14, Western Carolina 7
In Greenville, N.C., Tyler Spillner went 4 for 4
with a double, four runs and two RBI as Purdue outscored Western
Carolina in the Keith LeClair Classic. The Catamounts (4-3) tied
the game at 7-7 with four in the top of the sixth before the
Boilermakers (5-1) exploded for seven in the bottom of the
frame. Eric Charles (3 for 4, 2B, 1 R), Kevin Plawecki (3 for 4,
2B, 1 R) and Cameron Perkins (1 for 4) all drove in three for
Purdue, which went 2-1 on the weekend. Jacob Hoyle had three
hits and three RBI, while Adam Martin homered and drove in two
for WCU.
Rhode Island 2, Connecticut 0
In Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Anthony Pisani and three
relievers combined on the six-hit shutout as Rhode Island
blanked Connecticut on the final day of the Cougar Invitational.
Pisani (2-0) allowed three hits and three walks in six innings
with five strikeouts to pick up the victory. Mike Bradstreet
pitched a hitless ninth with one strikeout to notch his second
save. The Rams (4-2) scored unearned runs in the fifth and
eighth, finishing with three hits. URI went 3-0 this weekend,
with wins over host College of Charleston and Xavier. Ryan
Fuller went 1 for 2 with two walks for the Huskies (2-4).
Anthony Marzi (0-1, 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 UE, 3 BB, 3 K) took the loss.
Coastal Carolina 3, NC State 2
In Myrtle Beach, S.C., Justin Creel went 3 for 3
with one run and one RBI as Coastal Carolina edged NC State at
BB&T Coastal Field. Andrew Ciencin and Danny Canela drove in
runs in the top of the third for the Wolfpack (5-2). The
Chanticleers (3-3) scored one in the fourth and took the lead
with two in the seventh. Aaron Burke (1-0, 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 K)
earned the win in relief, while Ryan Connolly allowed one hit in
a scoreless ninth for his second save. NC State pitchers
combined for 17 strikeouts, starter Carlos Rodon (3 H, 1 R, 2
BB) fanned 10 in four innings and Ethan Ogburn (3 H, 2 R, 1 ER,
2 BB) struck out seven in four innings.
Tennessee 10, Seton Hall 2
In Knoxville, Tenn., Jared Allen had a two-run
double in a four-run first as Tennessee completed a three-game
sweep of Seton Hall. The Volunteers are 7-0 for the first time
since 2003. Allen and Chris Fritts (1 for 1, 3B, 2 BB) both
drove in three, while Zach Osborne went 3 for 3 with three runs
for UT. Nick Blount (2-0, 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K) picked up
the victory. Mike Genovese and Giuseppe Papaccio both had one
hit and one RBI for the Pirates (2-5).
Southern Miss 8, Troy 1
In Hattiesburg, Miss., Boomer Scarborough tossed
five scoreless innings as Southern Miss won its series against
Troy. Scarborough (1-0) allowed two hits and five walks with two
strikeouts. Mason Robbins and Travis Creel both drove in two for
the Golden Eagles (4-3). Southern Miss scored two in the first
and four in the third to take control. Clay Holcomb went 1 for 3
and scored the lone run for the Trojans (3-3).
Stony Brook 4, Nicholls 1
In Thibodaux, La., James Campbell and Frankie
Vanderka combined on the two-hitter as Stony Brook downed
Nicholls at Ray E. Didier Field. Campbell (1-0) allowed two hits
and one run in seven innings with two walks and seven strikeouts
for the victory. Vanderka tossed two hitless innings with two
strikeouts to record his first save. Jeremy Hill had a RBI
groundout in the first for the Colonels (2-5). The Seawolves
(4-0) tied it in the second and took the lead with two in the
fourth. Cole Peregine drove in two, while Travis Jankowski, Pat
Cantwell, Maxx Tissenbaum and Kevin Krause all had two hits for
Stony Brook.
Milwaukee 6, Minnesota 1
In Minneapolis, Milwaukee scored three in the
seventh to break a 1-1 deadlock in splitting its four-game
series with Minnesota at the Metrodome. Paul Hoenecke went 2 for
2 with a walk and two runs, while Mark Strey drove in two for
the Panthers (2-5). Dan Olinger went 2 for 3 with one RBI for
the Golden Gophers (3-4). Alex Erdmann (1-0) fanned one in 0.2
innings of relief to earn the win. Jordan Guth allowed one hit
in the ninth with one strikeout to record the save.
Bethune-Cookman 2, USF 0
In Tampa, Fla., Rayan Gonzalez and Jordan Daily
combined on the shutout as Bethune-Cookman won its series at
USF. Gonzalez (2-0) allowed three hits in seven innings with no
walks and seven strikeouts. Dailey surrendered two hits in two
innings with two strikeouts to pick up his second save. The
Wildcats (4-3) scored single runs in the first and seventh.
Brashad Johnson (3 for 4) and Josh Johnson both doubled and
drove in one. James Ramsay and Buddy Putnam both had two hits
for the Bulls (4-3).
FGCU 5, Bryant 1
In Fort Myers, Fla., Brandon Bixler was one out
from a no-hitter as FGCU completed the series sweep of Bryant.
David Soltis singled up the middle with two away in the top of
the ninth, driving in Kevin Brown with the lone run for the
Bulldogs (2-4). Bixler (1-1) walked three and struck out 12,
throwing 136 pitches. Danny Patrick came in and struck out the
final hitter to secure the victory. Mike Reeves went 1 for 3 and
drove in three for the Eagles (4-3).
Florida Atlantic 7, Manhattan 3
In Boca Raton, Fla., Florida Atlantic scored two
in the seventh and four in the eighth to erase a 2-1 deficit and
take three of four from Manhattan. Mike Albaladejo (3 for 3, 2
RBI) had a sacrifice fly in the seventh to tie it before Corey
Keller drove in the go-ahead run later in the frame. Kyle Newton
homered and Nathan Pittman added a two-run double in the eighth.
Alex Hudak also homered for the Owls (6-1). Nick Camastro went 2
for 4 with two RBI for the Jaspers (1-3).
