McVaney leads Texas
State past Louisiana-Lafayette
UNLV nips UC Irvine, Saint Mary's stops
Sacramento St., Oregon tops Hawaii
In San Marcos, Texas, Jeff McVaney went 4 for 5
with a double, two runs and two RBI as Texas State downed
Louisiana-Lafayette 9-5 Monday afternoon in the final game of
the CenturyLink Bobcat Invitational. The Bobcats (2-1) scored in
five of their first six at-bats in building a 7-2 lead. Nick
Smelser (3 for 4, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Tyler Sibley (2 for 5, 2
2B, 1 R) both added to the TSU offense, while Casey Kalenkosky
went deep for the first time in 2012. Kyle Finnegan (1-0, 6 IP,
4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) was the starter and winner for the
Bobcats. Daniel Nichols drove in a pair for the Ragin’ Cajuns
(1-2).
UNLV 3, UC Irvine 2
In Irvine, Calif., Erick Fedde pitched six
scoreless innings as UNLV edged UC Irvine at Anteater Ballpark.
Fedde (1-0) allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three.
Mark Shannon allowed one hit over the final two innings with two
strikeouts to notch his first save. Scott Dysinger (2 for 4) had
a RBI double in the top of the first to give the Rebels the
early lead. Danny Higa walked and scored on an error in the
fifth, while Trent Cook added a run-scoring single in the
seventh to make it 3-0. Jordan Fox (3 for 4) had a RBI double
and Ronnie Shaeffer (2 for 4) added a run-scoring single in the
eighth for the Anteaters.
Saint Mary’s 7, Sacramento State 2
In Sacramento, Calif., Ben Griset allowed one
unearned run in seven innings as Saint Mary’s defeated
Sacramento State at John Smith Field. Griset (1-0) allowed four
hits and three walks while fanning seven. Troy Channing (3 for
4, 2 R) had a bases-clearing double in a four-run fourth for the
Gaels (4-0). Kyle Moses (3 for 5) had a run-scoring single in
the bottom of the frame for the Hornets (1-3). SMC took control
with a three-run sixth, pushing its lead to 7-1. Chris Murphy
had two hits and two RBI for the Gaels. SMC is off to a 4-0
start for the first time since 1977.
Oregon 12, Hawaii 6
In Honolulu, Ryon Healy went 2 for 4 with four
RBI, including a two-run double to spark a seven-run third, as
Oregon outscored Hawaii in front of 3,480 fans at Les Murakami
Stadium. J.J. Altobelli went 5 for 6 with three doubles, two
runs and two RBI, while Aaron Jones added two hits and three
runs for the Ducks (3-1). Shaun Chase (2 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI)
homered for Oregon. Trevor Podratz (1 for 4, 2 RBI), Stephen
Ventimilia (1 for 2, 3 BB, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Collin Bennett (2 for
2, 2 BB, 1 R, 1 RBI) led the offense for the Rainbows (1-3).
UC Davis 9, Utah 8 (10)
In Davis, Calif., David Popkins was hit by a
pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th to force
in John Williams with the game-winner as UC Davis edged Utah at
Dobbins Stadium. Shaun Cooper hit a two-run homer with two away
in the top of the ninth for the Utes (1-3) to knot the score at
8 and force the extra frame. The Aggies (3-1) led 5-0 after two
before Biss Larsen doubled and James Brooks walked to start the
top of the third for Utah. Shortstop Alex Lipson turned a Tyson
Gonzalez lineout into a triple play to escape the threat. Parker
Morin had a bases-clearing double in the fifth and Brooks belted
a three-run homer in the sixth as Utah took a 6-5 lead. UC Davis
reclaimed the lead with a pair in the bottom of the frame as
Williams had a pinch-hit RBI triple and scored to make it 7-6.
Evan Wolf had a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh and
scored in a wild pitch as the Aggies took an 8-6 advantage.
Lipson and Austin Logan both knocked in a pair for the Aggies.
Kentucky 6, USC Upstate 0
In Spartanburg, S.C., Corey Littrell recorded
career highs by pitching seven innings and striking out eight as
Kentucky blanked USC Upstate at Harley Park. Littrell (1-0)
allowed two hits and one walk in earning the victory. J.T Riddle
(3 for 5, 2 RBI) and Austin Cousino (3 for 5, 2 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI)
led the offensive attack for the Wildcats (3-0). Jordan Stampler
and Gaither Bumgardner both had hits for the Spartans (2-1).
CSU Bakersfield 8,
Kansas State 1
In Bakersfield, Calif., D.C. Legg went 3 for 4
with two home runs and five RBI as CSU Bakersfield won its
series against Kansas State. Legg belted a three-run homer in
the bottom of the first and added a solo shot in the eighth for
the Roadrunners (2-1). Taylor Aikenhead (1-0) went the distance
for CSUB, allowing three hits, one earned run and five walks.
Aikenhead threw 147 pitches and struck out seven. Oscar Sanay
went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and one RBI for the
Roadrunners. Blair DeBord went 1 for 3 and drove in the lone run
for the Wildcats (1-2).
