Hultzen hits
inside-the-park grand slam for Virginia
UCF defeats Florida, Florida State edges
FGCU, Oklahoma beats Bacone
In Charlottesville, Va., Danny Hultzen had an
inside-the-park grand slam to highlight a seven-run third as
top-ranked Virginia defeated Richmond 12-1 Wednesday evening in
front of 3,128 fans at Davenport Field. David Coleman went 3 for
3 with two runs for the Cavaliers (38-3). John Hicks added two
hits and two RBI for UVa. Scott Silverstein (1-0) allowed one
hit in three scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts
to earn the victory. Mike Mergenthaler had a sacrifice fly in
the ninth for the Spiders (19-16-2).
UCF 8, No. 5 Florida 6
In Orlando, Fla., Chris Taladay and Derek Luciano
both drove in three as UCF outscored Florida in front of a
record-crowd of 3,601 at Jay Bergman Field. The Knights (24-14)
built an 8-0 lead after seven before the Gators (28-10) scored
six in the eighth. Luciano and D.J. Hicks both homered for UCF.
Tyler Thompson had a two-run homer and Preston Tucker added a
grand slam for Florida. Chase Bradford (3-1, 2 IP, 2 K) got the
win for the Knights.
No. 11 Florida State 6, FGCU 4
In Tallahassee, Fla., Jayce Boyd went 3 for 4
with two RBI as Florida State edged FGCU in front of 4,008 fans
at Dick Howser Stadium. The Eagles (19-19) scored one in the top
of the first before the Seminoles (28-10) tied it in the bottom
of the frame and put up two in the second for a 3-1 lead. FGCU
tied it with single runs in the fifth and sixth before FSU took
the lead for good with three in the bottom of the sixth. Devon
Travis went 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBI for the Seminoles.
Parker Brunelle had two hits and two runs for FSU. Zach Maxfield
went 3 for 3, while Tim Roberson and Sean Dwyer both went deep
for Eagles. Brian Busch (2-1, 2 IP, 1 K) earned the win in
relief, while Daniel Bennett allowed one hit in the ninth for
his fourth save.
No. 15 Oklahoma 5, Bacone 2
In Norman, Okla., Casey Johnson had two doubles
and two runs as Oklahoma defeated Bacone at L. Dale Mitchell
Park. Cameron Seitzer went 2 for 2 with two RBI for the Sooners
(27-11). Brandon Jackson went 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI
for the Warriors (13-33). Steven Bruce (1-0, 6.1 IP, 7 IP, 1 R,
1 BB, 1 K) earned the win in relief.
