South Carolina nips Vanderbilt

career wins leader at Virginia, Oregon State nips Stanford
In
Columbia, S.C., Michael Roth outdueled Sonny Gray as No. 3 South
Carolina claimed the SEC series opener from top-ranked
Vanderbilt 3-1 Friday evening in front of 8,242 fans at Columbia
Stadium. Roth (8-1) allowed three hits and a single run in the
eighth. He walked two and struck out eight. Matt Price fanned
the four he faced for his 11th save. Gray (7-2) gave up 11 hits
and three runs in 7.2 innings with one walk and seven
strikeouts. Scott Wingo (2 for 3) had a run-scoring single in
the third to start the scoring for the Gamecocks (11-2, 27-6).
Adam Matthews (2 for 4) made it 2-0 in the fourth with a RBI
base hit. Peter Mooney homered in the seventh to give South
Carolina a 3-0 advantage. Bryan Johns tripled in the top of the
eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Kemp to put the
Commodores (10-3, 31-4) on the board. Evan Marzilli went 2 for 3
with a run for the Gamecocks. Jason Esposito and Curt Casali
both had a hit and a walk for Vanderbilt.
No. 2 Virginia 10, Duke 0
In Charlottesville, Va., Danny Hultzen became
Virginia’s career leader in victories in a win over Duke in the
ACC series lid-lifter in front of a crowd of 3,550 at Davenport
Field. Hultzen (8-0) allowed four singles in seven innings with
no walks and nine strikeouts to raise his career mark to 28-2.
The Cavaliers (14-2, 24-3) scored three in the third, two in the
fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh. Colin
Harrington went 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI, while Jared
King (2 for 4, 2 R), Chris Taylor (2 for 5, 1 R) and John Hicks
(2 for 3, 1 R) each drove in two for UVa. Jeff Kremer had two
hits for the Blue Devils (4-12, 20-17). Brian O’Connor earned
career win No. 350 in 472 games, the quickest in ACC history.
Mike Martin of Florida State reached the mark in 478 contests.
No. 13 Oregon State 1, No. 18 Stanford 0
In Stanford, Calif., Sam Gaviglio tossed eight
scoreless innings as Oregon State blanked Stanford in front of a
crowd of 1,684 at Sunken Diamond. Gaviglio (7-1) allowed four
hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Tony Bryant struck out
the side in the ninth for his fourth save. Mark Appel (2-4, 6.2
IP, 7 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K) took the loss for the Cardinal (3-4,
16-10). The Beavers (6-1, 25-7) got their lone run in the top of
the first as Michael Miller (3 for 5) had a leadoff single and
scored on a two-out single by Kavin Keyes. Jared Norris went 2
for 3 for OSU. Jake Stewart had two hits, including a double,
for Stanford.
No. 4 Florida 5, Georgia 4
In Athens, Ga., Steven Rodriguez came on to
strike out the final batter of the game with the tying run on
base as Florida edged Georgia in the SEC series opener in front
of 2,432 fans at Foley Field. After both teams scored in the
first, the Gators (10-3, 27-8) put up two in the fifth and two
more in the sixth for a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs (8-5, 18-17)
answered with two in the seventh and got a run-scoring single by
Peter Verdin with two away in the ninth to pull to within one.
But Rodriguez slammed the door to record his second save. Hudson
Randall (6-1, 6.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) was the starter
and winner for Florida. Austin Maddox went 3 for 4 with one run
and two RBI to lead the Gator attack. Levi Hyams and Kyle Farmer
both had two hits for Georgia.
No. 5 Texas 4, Texas Tech 1
In Austin, Texas, Brandon Loy’s two-run single
capped a three-run second as Texas topped Texas Tech in the Big
12 series opener in front of 7,286 fans at UFCU Disch-Falk
Field. Starter Taylor Jungmann (8-0, 7 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K)
held the lead in recording the win, while Corey Knebel worked a
hitless ninth for his 10th save. Barrett Barnes (2 for 4) had a
RBI single in the fifth for the Red Raiders (5-8, 22-14). Erich
Weiss went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI for the Longhorns
(10-3, 26-8).
NC State 5, No. 6 North Carolina 4
In Raleigh, N.C., NC State scored three in the
fifth to take the lead and held North Carolina scoreless over
the final seven innings in claiming the first of three ACC
contests in front of 2,775 fans at Doak Field. Tarran Senay had
a two-run double in the bottom of the first as the Wolfpack
(6-10, 19-16) took the early lead. Ben Bunting had a three-run
triple and scored in the top of the second as the Tar Heels
(12-4, 30-6) took a 4-2 advantage. NC State starter Cory Mazzoni
(3-4, 7 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 7 K) settled down after that to
stick around long enough to earn the victory. Chris Overman
fanned three of the five batters he faced in logging his third
save. Pratt Maynard’s two-run double tied it in the fifth and he
scored on a base hit by Andrew Ciencin to give the Wolfpack the
lead for good. Harold Riggins had two hits and a run for NC
State. Chaz Frank walked twice and scored once for UNC.
No. 7 Texas A&M 5, Baylor 1
In Waco, Texas, John Stilson pitched eight
scoreless innings as Texas A&M topped Baylor in the Big 12
series opener in front of 3,310 fans at Baylor Ballpark Stilson
(3-1) allowed five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.
The Aggies (10-3, 25-9) scored single runs in the third and
fourth before posting two in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage.
Tyler Naquin drove in two, while Brandon Wood went 2 for 3 with
two runs and one RBI for A&M. Wes Mercurio had a pinch-hit RBI
single in the bottom of the ninth for the Bears (5-8, 19-16).
Josh Ludy added two hits for Baylor.
No. 8 Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Santa Barbara

In Fullerton, Calif., Carlos Lopez had a
run-scoring triple to plate the game-winner in the sixth and UC
Santa Barbara did not have a baserunner over the final three
innings as Cal State Fullerton took the Big West series opener
in front of 2,241 onlookers at Goodwin Field. Noe Ramirez (6-2)
allowed five hits and two runs in seven innings with one walk
and seven strikeouts, including fanning the final three he
faced. Dylan Fioro worked a perfect eighth before Nick Ramirez
struck out two of three in the ninth for his eighth save. The
Gauchos (2-2, 14-14) scored in the second before the Titans
(6-1, 25-9) answered with two in the third. UCSB tied it in the
top of the sixth before the three-bagger by Lopez gave Fullerton
the lead for good. Ivory Thomas finished with two hits and one
run for the Titans. Lance Roenicke had two hits, including a
double, and one RBI for the Gauchos.
No. 9 Arizona State 3, Washington State 1
In Tempe, Ariz., Arizona State used a three-run
fifth and strong pitching to edge Washington State to start
their Pac-10 series in front of 3,072 fans at Packard Stadium.
The Cougars (2-8, 14-15) got a run-scoring single from Cody
Bartlett in the third to take the early lead. Xorge Carrillo (2
for 3) tied it in the fifth with a base hit and an error allowed
two more to score as the Sun Devils (6-4, 23-9) took a 3-1
advantage. Brady Rodgers (6-2, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 K) earned the
victory, while Mitchell Lambson struck out the side in the ninth
for his fifth save. Adam Conley (4-4, 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1
BB, 7 K) went the distance for WSU. Austin Barnes and Zach
Wilson both had two hits for ASU. Derek Jones had three hits for
the Cougars.
Virginia Tech 2, No. 10 Florida State 1
In Blacksburg, Va., Joe Mantiply and two
relievers combined to hold Florida State to one run as Virginia
Tech won the ACC series opener in front of 1,473 fans at English
Field. Mantiply (4-5) allowed three hits and one run in 5.2
innings with four walks and four strikeouts to earn the victory.
Manny Martir gave up one hit and two walks in 0.2 innings with
one strikeout before Jake Atwell worked the final 2.2 innings
with two hits and two strikeouts to notch his first save. Jake
Atwell had a RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch in the third
for the Hokies (4-12, 19-17). Rafael Lopez drew a bases-loaded
walk in the fifth for the lone run for the Seminoles (9-7,
24-10). Tim Smalling had two hits for Tech. Sean Gilmartin (4-5,
8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K) went the distance for FSU.
No. 11 TCU 11, San Diego State 4
In San Diego, Jason Coats went 3 for 5 with two
runs and three RBI to lead TCU past San Diego State in the
Mountain West series opener at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Horned
Frogs (8-2, 23-11) blew open a tight game with four in the fifth
and four more in the sixth. Coats had a run-scoring double in
the first, a RBI single in the third and a run-scoring base hit
in the fifth to raise his career hit total to 200. Jerome Pena
(2 for 4) had a two-run triple to cap the four-run sixth as TCU
took a 10-2 lead. Jantzen Witte had three hits and three runs
for the Frogs. Kyle Winkler (6-1, 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K)
picked up the win for TCU. Cody Smith had two hits and two runs,
while Brandon Meredith knocked in pair for the Aztecs (5-5,
11-23).
Oklahoma State 8, No. 12 Oklahoma 7
In Tulsa, Okla., Dane Phillips belted a leadoff
homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift Oklahoma State past
Oklahoma to start the Big 12 and Bedlam Series in front of 9,431
fans at ONEOK Field. Chris Marlowe (3-2) pitched 3.2 scoreless
innings in relief with two hits and seven strikeouts to earn the
victory. The Sooners (6-6, 25-9) built a 5-1 lead before the
Cowboys (9-4, 26-8) put up six unearned runs in the bottom of
the fifth for a 7-5 advantage. OU got RBI singles from Caleb
Bushyhead and Tyler Ogle (4 for 5, 3 RBI) in the sixth to knot
the score at 7. Phillips finished with two hits and two runs,
while Jared Womack added two hits and two RBI for OSU.
No. 14 Georgia Tech 5, Wake Forest 1
In Winston-Salem, N.C., Mark Pope tossed a
one-hitter as Georgia Tech took the ACC series opener from Wake
Forest at Gene Hooks Field. Pope (8-1) walked two and struck out
eight, needing 109 pitches for his fourth complete game. The
only hit was a homer by James Harris in the third for the Demon
Deacons (5-11, 13-22). That dinger tied it at one before the
Yellow Jackets (13-3, 26-9) put up two in the fifth and two in
the eighth. Kyle Wren went 3 for 5 with two runs, while Zane
Evans knocked in a pair for Tech.
No. 15 Fresno State 8, Nevada 3
In Fresno, Calif., Justin Charles had a two-run
single in a five-run eighth as Fresno State took the WAC series
opener from Nevada at Beiden Field. Wynns had a leadoff single
and scored the tie-breaking run in the eighth before the base
hit by Charles made it 6-3. Aaron Judge went 4 for 5 with two
RBI, while Brennan Gowens added three hits, one run and one RBI
for the Bulldogs (3-2, 23-5). Joe Kohan went 2 for 4 with two
RBI for the Wolf Pack (0-1, 11-18).
No. 19 Arizona 5, No. 16 UCLA 4
In Los Angeles, Joey Rickard had a three-run
homer in the fifth to put Arizona ahead to stay in its Pac-10
victory over UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium. After driving in
one in a two-run third, Rickard’s blast in the fifth gave the
Wildcats (5-5, 23-11) a 5-3 lead. Rickard also had a pair of
outfield assists in the third as runners were cut down at the
plate. Bryce Ortega went 2 for 4 with two runs for Arizona. Jeff
Gelalich had two hits for the Bruins (7-3, 17-12), a two-run
double in a three-run third and a solo homer in the fifth. Kurt
Heyer (6-1, 7.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 6 K) picked up the win,
while Matt Chaffee (1.2 IP, 1 H, 4 K) got his fourth save.
Gerrit Cole (4-2, 8 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 11 K) took the loss for UCLA.
No. 17 Arkansas 6, Mississippi State 5
In Fayetteville, Ark., Kyle Robinson had a
two-run homer to spark a three-run eighth as Arkansas rallied
past Mississippi State in front of 7,434 fans at Baum Stadium.
The blast by Robinson (3 for 4, 3 R, 3 RBI) tied the game at 5
before a base by Tim Carver (2 for 4) later in the frame plated
the game-winner. Nolan Sanburn then pitched a perfect ninth for
his seventh save. Cade Lynch (4-1, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K) tossed 4.2
scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. The Bulldogs
(5-8, 21-13) scored two in the second and three in the fourth to
take a 5-2 advantage. Wes Thigpen had two hits and three RBI for
MSU.
No. 20 California 6, Washington 2
In Seattle, Mitch Delfino homered to spark
California past Washington in the Pac-10 series opener at Husky
Ballpark. Delfino went deep in the top of the fifth to break a
scoreless tie. With the score even at 1, Darrel Matthews
delivered a two-run double in the seventh. Chadd Krist added a
two-run double in a three-run eighth as the Golden Bears (7-3,
21-9) took a 6-1 advantage. Austin Booker went 2 for 3 with a
run for Cal. Eric Johnson (5-1, 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K)
earned the victory, while Kyle Porter (2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 6 K)
registered his second save. Jacob Lamb had three hits for the
Huskies (2-5, 10-21).
