Kraemer fans 10 as South Dakota State wins home opener

Hairston sets school record with six hits as Norfolk State tops Coppin State

 

In Brookings, S.C., Shane Kraemer fanned a career-high 10 in six innings as South Dakota State won its home opener over Dakota Wesleyan 12-3 Monday afternoon at Erv Huether Field. Kraemer (2-0) allowed five hits, three walks and two runs. Deon Entringer (3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K) finished the game to record his first save. Stephan Gunnell had a RBI single in the top of the first to give the Tigers (7-30) the early lead. The Jackrabbits (15-10) took the lead for good with a five-run second, sparked by a two-run single off the bat of Daniel Telford (3 for 5, 2 R). Andrew Melton had two hits and drove in three, while Jesse Sawyer (right) added three hits and three runs for SDSU. Jon Hart went 2 for 4 with two runs for DWU. The Jackrabbits have won 12 of their past 13.

 

Norfolk State 28, Coppin State 16

In Baltimore, Brandon Hairston set a school record with six hits as Norfolk State outscored Coppin State in a MEAC makeup game at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Spartans (6-2, 13-18) also tied school records with 25 hits and eight doubles. John Lynch had a two-run single in the first and his run-scoring base hit in the sixth made hit the career hits leader for NSU with 227. The Eagles (1-7, 3-24) led 12-7 after four before the Spartans scored five in the fifth and eight in the sixth to take control. Hairston went 6 for 6 with four runs and four RBI. Chris Joyce had two doubles and six RBI for NSU. Alex Black was 3 for 5 with a homer and five RBI, while Derek Richards went 5 for 5 with two runs and three RBI for CSU.
