Roth and Price combine
on shutout for South Carolina
BYU beats Air Force, Iona stops Stony
Brook, Robbins hits 3 HRs for DBU
In
Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Roth and Matt Price combined on the
shutout as third-ranked South Carolina blanked Tennessee 4-0
Thursday in front of 3,435 fans at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in the
inaugural ESPNU SEC Game of the Week. Roth (7-1) allowed six
hits and one walk in 7.2 innings with four strikeouts. Matt
Price gave up one hit and one walk over the final 1.1 innings
with one punchout for his eighth save. Christian Walker had a
RBI double and scored in the fourth as the Gamecocks (8-2, 24-5)
took a 2-0 lead. Evan Marzilli hit his first homer in the sixth
to extend the lead to 3-0. Jackie Bradley Jr. (2 for 4, 2 R)
(pictured) doubled and scored on a single by Adrian Morales in
the seventh to complete the scoring. Scott Wingo went 3 for 4
for South Carolina. Zach Osborne went 4 for 4 for the Volunteers
(2-8, 19-11).
BYU 10, Air Force 4
In Provo, Utah, Dane Nielsen went 2 for 2 with
two walks and three runs as BYU outlasted a 90-minute rain delay
to defeat Air Force in the Mountain West series opener at Larry
H. Miller Field. Nielsen doubled and scored on a groundout by
Andrew Law in the bottom of the third to put the Cougars (4-3,
16-12) ahead 2-1. Nielsen added a run-scoring single to cap a
two-run fourth as BYU led 4-1. Seth Kline had a two-run single
in a three-run sixth as the Falcons (0-6, 12-16) tied the game
at 4. Nielsen scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the frame
and Alex Wolfe added a two-run single to push the lead to 7-4.
Dillon Robinson had a RBI single in the seventh and Stephen
Wells followed with a two-run double to complete the scoring.
Matt Thorne had three hits and a run for Air Force. Justin Shutt
(2-2, 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 K) earned the win in relief.
Iona 10, Stony Brook 4
In Yaphank, N.Y., Chris Burke hit a two-run homer
in a four-run fourth as Iona defeated Stony Brook. Tanner Nivins
(2 for 4) had a two-run double in a three-run first for the
Seawolves (16-7). The Gaels (9-17) got one in the second and two
in the third to tie it before the four-run outburst in the
fourth put Iona ahead for good. Kyle Charron (2 for 4, 2 R, 2
RBI) went deep in the sixth for the Gaels. Joshua Mason (2 for
3) homered for the first time in the seventh for Stony Brook.
Burke finished with two hits and three RBI for Iona. Matt Marley
(1-2, 7.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K) was the starter and winner
for the Gaels.
Dallas Baptist 20, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0
In Dallas, Tyler Robbins belted three home runs
and drove in six as Dallas Baptist bounced Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Robbins homered to spark an eight-run first for the Patriots
(18-11). Robbins went deep twice in a nine-run fifth. Joel
Hutter went 2 for 4 with four runs, while Kenny Hatcher homered
with three runs and two RBI. Christian Matz had a hit and a walk
for the Golden Lions (7-21). Brandon Williamson (6-1) allowed
two hits and one walk in six innings with five strikeouts to
earn the victory.
Southern Utah 4, North Dakota State 3
In Cedar City, Utah, Bo Cuthbertson had a two-run
triple and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh as Southern
Utah edged North Dakota State in the opener of a four-game
Summit League set at Thunderbird Park. Zach Heidmann (2 for 3)
had a RBI double in the top of the first for the Bison (0-1,
2-17) before Cuthbertson (3 for 4) singled and scored in the
bottom of the frame. Max Casper had a run-scoring base hit in
the second to give NDSU a 2-1 advantage. Cuthbertson’s heroics
in the seventh gave the Thunderbirds (1-0, 12-14) a 4-2 lead.
The final run for the Bison came in the eighth. Mitchell
Kauweloa had two hits and one RBI for SUU. Tyler Steen had two
hits and a run for NDSU. Chris Chung (5-3, 8.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2
ER, 2 BB, 7 K) was victorious in his start, while Nick Newberry
got strikeouts for the game’s final two outs to record his
second save.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 7, Houston-Victoria 6
In Victoria, Texas, Michael Boyle tied a school
record with his seventh save as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi nipped
Houston-Victoria. Matt Holland (2 for 4) had a two-run double in
the top of the ninth to give the Islanders a 6-5 advantage. He
scored on a triple by Bobby Buckner (2 for 5) to make it 7-5.
After a leadoff double in the bottom of the frame, Boyle came in
and got a foulout, a sacrifice fly and a groundout to notch the
save. Chris Vergne went 1 for 3 with a homer, two walks and two
runs for the Islanders (21-12). A Kent went 3 for 4 with a
homer, two runs and two RBI for Jaguars (21-20).
Bryant 12, Harvard 1
In Smithfield, R.I., Brian O’Neil allowed one run
in seven innings as Bryant battered Harvard. O’Neil (3-2)
surrendered four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. The
Bulldogs (11-13) put up five in the third and added four in the
seventh and three in the eighth. David Soltis and Mike Delponte
both drove in two, and Jamie Skagerlind had three hits and one
RBI for Bryant. Kyle Larrow had one hit and one RBI for the
Crimson (3-21).
