Lassley's two-run
double gives win to Wichita State
Northeastern edges Duquesne in 11; Xavier
wins at Charleston Southern
In Wichita, Kan., Cody Lassley’s two-run double
in the bottom of the ninth gave Wichita State a 6-5 win over BYU
Monday afternoon in front of 2,744 fans at Eck Stadium. With one
out in the ninth, Will Baez and Ryan Jones had back-to-back
singles, setting the table for Lassley’s game-winning double.
The Cougars (3-6) built a 5-2 lead after four before Josh
Rosecrans singled and scored in the sixth to make it 5-3.
Rosecrans had an RBI groundout in the eighth to make it a
one-run contest. J.T. Musso’s three-run homer capped a four-run
fourth for BYU before Clint McKeever went deep in the bottom of
the frame for the Shockers (6-1). McKeever finished with three
hits. Kent Walton and Brandon Relf both had two hits for the
Cougars. Grant Muncrief (1-0) pitched 5.1 scoreless innings of
relief with one hit, three walks and five strikeouts to earn the
victory.
Northeastern 10, Duquesne 9 (11)
In Winter Haven, Fla., Sam Berg scored on a
passed ball in the bottom of the 11th as Northeastern outlasted
Duquesne. Berg had a two-out single and moved to third on a base
hit by Matt Miller. David Gustafson struck out, but the ball got
by the catcher, allowing Berg to score the game-winner. Jeff
Dunlap had a three-run double and Brendan Stokes added a two-run
homer in a six-run first for the Huskies (3-1). Rick Devereaux
had a three-run double in the eighth for the Dukes (0-6) that
tied the game at 9-9. Mike Tamsin had two hits, two RBI and a
run for Northeastern. Andrew Heck and Bill Torre both had three
hits for Duquesne.
Xavier 11, Charleston Southern 4
In Charleston, S.C., Billy O’Conner went 3 for 4
with three runs as Xavier defeated Charleston Southern at
Buccaneer Ballpark. After Scotty Radabaugh singled and scored in
the first for the Buccaneers (3-3), Adam Pasono homered in the
third for the Musketeers (3-1) to even it at 1-1. Sean Farrell’s
two-run single capped a five-run fifth as Xavier took control.
Pasono finished with two hits and four runs. John McCambridge
had three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Musketeers.
Radabaugh and Patrick Dolan both had three hits and a run for
CSU.
Rhode Island 12, Fairfield 6
In Winter Haven, Fla., Milan Adams went 3 for 4
with a homer, two runs and two RBI as Rhode Island doubled up
Fairfield. Jeff Cammans drove in five for the Rams (4-2) and Rob
Deveney added three hits for URI. A three-run triple by Cammans
keyed an eight-run first for the Rams. Mark Skrapits drove in
two for the Stags (0-2). Carmine DeVito had a double and a
triple for Fairfield with a run and an RBI.
Southern Utah 8-8, Portland 7-11
In Cedar City, Utah, Southern Utah and Portland
split a doubleheader at Thunderbird Park. SUU (5-4) scored a
pair in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 6-6 tie in the
opener. Matt Sanford’s RBI single broke the deadlock and Keli’I
Zablan’s bases-loaded walk plated the eventual game-winner. The
Pilots (4-4) used a three-run eighth to take the lead for good
in the nightcap. Craig Smith reached on a one-out single and
tied the game at 8-8 on a double by Beau Fraser. Cort
Carpenter’s base hit brought in pinch-runner Kyle Haskin with
the go-ahead run. Carpenter finished the day with five hits and
six RBI.
St. Bonaventure 11, New York Tech 5
In West Palm Beach, Fla., Anthony Randich went 3
for 4 with a double, two runs and two RBI as St. Bonaventure
outscored NYIT at the Papa John’s Challenge. After the Bears
(0-3) got a run in the bottom of the second, Kevin Suminski’s
two-run single capped a three-run second as the Bonnies (2-1)
took the lead for good. Tristan Mulcahy’s RBI double keyed a
seven-run sixth as St. Bonaventure built an 11-2 advantage.
