Former Tulane skipper David Pierce has been selected to be head coach at Texas.
Over the past two seasons, Pierce posted a 76-46 (.623) record with the Green Wave. Tulane went 41-21 in 2016, won the American Athletic Conference regular season title and earned its second straight NCAA Tournament bid.
Prior to his stint at Tulane, Pierce spent three seasons as head coach at Sam Houston State, registering a record of 121-63 (.658). The Bearkats reached the NCAA Tournament in each of those seasons. SHSU won the Southland Conference title in each of those three seasons. The program’s only previous championship came in 1989. Pierce was Southland Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
In five seasons as a Division I head coach, Pierce has an overall record of 197-109 (.644).
This summer, Pierce is an assistant coach with the 2016 U.S. Collegiate National Team.
Before his tenure at Sam Houston State, Pierce spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at Rice. He was hitting coach from 2003-05 before serving as pitching coach from 2006-11. Pierce helped the Owls win their first national title in 2003. During his time as pitching coach, Pierce had 27 hurlers taken in the MLB Draft, including eight in the first 10 rounds.
Pierce played two seasons at Wharton County Junior College (1982-83) before spending two years at Houston (1984-85). The Cougars reached the NCAA Tournament during his senior season.
The coaching career for Pierce began as an assistant at St. Pius X High School, where he played, from 1989-90. He was an assistant at Episcopal High School from 1992-95. Pierce was head coach at Dobie High School in Pasadena, Texas, from 1996-2001. He led the Longhorns to three District titles and three Regional semifinals. Pierce also was an assistant at Houston.
