North Carolina Central University announced the decision to drop baseball at the end of the 2021 season.
According to a school release, the current funding model for athletics was not sustainable due to increased athletic expenditures over the past four years as well as the impact of the pandemic on revenues.
NCCU cut operational costs by 30% since March 2020, but additional cuts were deemed necessary.
The school will have 14 varsity sports, the minimum required for NCAA Division I membership.
NCCU will honor all existing and new scholarships for baseball student-athletes who choose to stay. Those who transfer will be immediately eligible for competition.
Jim Koerner is in his 10th season as head coach of the Eagles. NCCU was 6-11 in the truncated 2020 campaign. The Hawks went 21-28 overall and 10-14 in the MEAC in 2019.
