A report late Monday night from 247 Sports that Mississippi State Andy Cannizaro would no longer be the coach of the Bulldogs was confirmed Tuesday morning when the school announced the second-year coach had resigned immediately.
In a statement, MSU Athletic Director John Cohen said he accepted Cannizaro’s resignation. In the release, Cannizaro said, “I had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately I made some poor decisions. I hope Mississippi State and all of the fans and people affected will one day forgive me.”
The school announced that assistant coach Gary Henderson, a 29-year coaching veteran who led the Kentucky program for eight years, will take over on an interim basis.
Cohen selected Cannizaro to replace him when he became Athletic Director late in 2016. Cannizaro guided the Bulldogs to a 40-27 record and a Super Regional appearance in his only full season. His squad opened this season by dropping three straight games at Southern Miss.
