Xavier 3, No. 7 Kentucky 2 (10)
In Lexington, Ky., Allbry Major had a two-run single in the first and Natale Monastra delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th as Xavier knocked off UK. Joe Gellenbeck went 3 for 3 with two walks and two runs for the Musketeers (1-3). T.J. Collett (2 for 5) homered for the Wildcats (4-1). There were 4.118 fans on hand, the largest home crowd in UK history in the 50th and final season of Cliff Hagan Stadium.
South Alabama 10, No. 14 Southern Miss 9
In Mobile, Ala., Michael Sandle drove in three, including the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth, as South Alabama plated four in the inning to edge Southern Miss. Trailing 8-6, the Jaguars (4-1) got an Andrew Bates RBI single before Sandle had a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 8. Travis Swaggerty (2 RBI) walked with the bases loaded for another run, and Brendan Donovan (2 for 3, 2 RBI) added another on a sac fly. Luke Reynolds went 3 for 5 with two solo homers for the Golden Eagles (3-1).
VMI 9, No. 17 Virginia 4
In Charlottesville, Va., Matt Dunlevy drove in three, and Will Malbon went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI as VMI spoiled Virginia’s celebration of the renovation of Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (2-2) showed off its updated digs for the first time, but the Keydets (2-2) put six runs on the board in the top of the first, giving them a second big early-season win after topping South Carolina over the weekend. Caleb Knight went 3 for 4 with two RBI for Virginia.
UNCW 5, No. 6 North Carolina 4
In Chapel Hill, N.C., Mason Berne homered and added two doubles as UNCW rallied to nip UNC. Berne’s three-run dinger in the sixth gave the Seahawks (3-1) a 4-3 edge. After the Tar Heels (2-2) tied it in the seventh, an RBI single by Zack Canada in the top of the ninth plated the winning run.
No. 4 Texas Tech 12, New Mexico State 0
In Lubbock, Texas, Ryan Shetter allowed one hit and fanned nine in six innings as TTU blanked NMSU. Brian Klein (3 for 4, 3 R, 3 RBI) homered twice for the Red Raiders (5-0). Mason Fishback had two hits, including a double, for the Aggies (2-2).
No. 5 Florida State 5, USF 2
In Tallahassee, Fla., Steven Wells had an RBI double to snap a 1-1 tie and spark a four-run eighth as FSU outlasted USF. Drew Mendoza had two hits and two RBI for the Seminoles (4-0). Chris Chatfield went 2 for 3 with one RBI for the Bulls (1-3).
