In Los Angeles, Zach Muckenhirn tossed a three-hit shutout with a career-high nine strikeouts as North Dakota edged USC 1-0 Friday evening. Muckenhim (1-0) retired the final 15 hitters in recording his second career shutout. Miles Lewis singled in the sixth and scored on a double by Brett Harrison for the only run for UND (1-0). Kyle Davis (8.0 IP, 5 H, R, BB) struck out 10 for the Trojans (0-1).

 

Florida Atlantic 10, No. 16 Mississippi State 6

In Starkville, Miss., Esteban Puerta had a two-run single and Gunnar Lambert added a two-run double in an eight-run seventh as FAU outscored MSU. Puerta had three hits and three RBI for the Owls (2-0), who beat South Dakota State 11-5 earlier in the day. Brandon Rhodes (1-0, 6 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 K) was the starter and victor for FAU. Jack Kruger had three hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs (0-1).

 

No. 1 Florida, 4, FGCU 2

In Gainesville, Fla., Mike Rivera homered and drove in two as Florida, the unanimous No. 1 team entering the season, slipped past Florida Gulf Coast.  Logan Shore allowed one run in five innings to post the win, and Dane Dunning earned his first career save for the Gators (1-0). Jake Noll went 3 for 4 with a run for FGCU (0-1).

 

No. 2 Louisville 21, SIUE 4

In Louisville, Ky., Danny Rosenbaum went 2 for 3 with two runs and four RBI, and Corey Ray had two hits, two RBI and three runs as Louisville pounded out 17 hits in its season opener. Kyle Funkhouser allowed two runs over five innings with three strikeouts and four walks for the Cardinals (1-0). Keaton Wright went 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for SIUE (0-1).

 

No. 17 Houston 13, Villanova 1

In Houston, Jacob Campbell drove in four and Joe Davis knocked in three as Houston overwhelmed Villanova. Campbell had a three-run homer in the third for the Cougars (1-0). Connor Wong also went deep for UH. Andrew Lantrip (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out five in six shutout innings. Kevin Jewitt went 1 for 2 with two walks for the Wildcats (0-1).

 

Old Dominion 5, No. 20 NC State 0

In Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sam Sinnen allowed two hits in five scoreless innings as Old Dominion blanked NC State. Sinnen (1-0) walked two and fanned three. Brett Smith (H, BB, 4 K) and Nick Hartman (3 K) each pitched two scoreless innings to preserve the shutout. Catcher Kurt Sinnen, brother of the starting pitcher, drove in two, while Nick Walker went 2 for 2 with three walks, two runs and one RBI for the Monarchs (1-0). Stephen Pitarra had two hits for the Wolfpack (0-1).

 

No. 18 Cal State Fullerton at Stanford was postponed. Teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
