Boyd leads Norfolk State past Virginia State

Sacramento State thumps Louisiana Tech; IPFW wins first Summit game

 

In Norfolk, Va., John Boyd had three hits with two doubles and four RBI as Norfolk State outscored Virginia State 13-9 Thursday at Marty L. Miller Field for its sixth consecutive victory. Jerrod Farley (left) had a double, a triple, two runs and drove in two for the Spartans (13-10). Brandon Hairston also had two hits, two runs and two RBI for NSU. Brandon Crump went 2-2 with two RBI for the Trojans (11-21). Jeff Shelton went deep for VSU.

 

Sacramento State 17, Louisiana Tech 2

In Ruston, La., Gabe Jacobo had three of his team’s five home runs as Sacramento State defeated Louisiana Tech at J.C. Love Field in the opener of their WAC series. Jacobo had four hits and six RBI. Ryan Blair and Tim Wheeler each had three hits for the Hornets (6-2, 11-15). Kevin Winn had two hits and Matt Combs belted a two-run homer for the Bulldogs (2-6, 15-12).

 

IPFW 21, Southern Utah 13

In Cedar City, Utah, Jared Davis drove in six as IPFW outscored Southern Utah to win its first Summit League game. Davis was a single short of the cycle, hitting a triple in the first, a three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run double in the seventh. Shaun VanDriessche had three hits, including two home runs, and knocked in four for the Mastodons (1-0, 5-15-1). Jimmy Gilliland added four hits, four runs and three RBI for IPFW. Nick Freitas homered three times for the Thunderbirds (0-1, 11-12).

 

Le Moyne 11, Cornell 5 (10)

In Ithaca, N.Y., Chris Edmondson tripled and scored to ignite a six-run tenth as Le Moyne got by Cornell at Hoy Field. Sean Paino’s base hit brought home Edmondson with the go-ahead run for the Dolphins (10-14). The Big Red (6-11) forced extra innings with a Jadd Schmeitzer two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

 

BYU 10, UNLV 7 (10)

In Las Vegas, J.T. Musso blasted a three-run homer in the top of the tenth to give BYU a victory over UNLV in the opener of their Mountain West Conference series. The Cougars (4-3, 13-16) snapped a six-game losing streak. The Rebels (4-3, 12-14) led 7-3 after seven before Bryce Ayoso’s three-run double capped a four-run rally in the top of the eighth for BYU.

 

Connecticut 14, Fairfield 5

In Storrs, Conn., Mike Olt’s grand slam capped an eight-run seventh as Connecticut defeated Fairfield at J.O. Christian Field. The Stags (5-18) scored a pair in the top of the seventh to trail 6-4 before a two-run single by Doug Elliot ignited the rally in the bottom of the frame by the Huskies (15-12).

 

Marist 6, New York Tech 5

In Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Richard Curylo and Ricky Pacione each had three hits as Marist edged NYIT. Curylo’s homer in the bottom of the first evened the score at 1-1 and Pacione singled and scored on a sacrifice fly later in the frame to give the Red Foxes (7-12) the lead for good. Brendan Chapin pitched the ninth to notch his first save. Nick LaLuna had three hits for the Bears (6-10). Jerry Smith drove in two for NYIT.

 

Florida A&M 11, Concordia (Ala.) 1

In Tallahassee, Fla., Tim Jones had four hits and three RBI as Florida A&M overwhelmed Concordia at Moore-Kittles Field. Darryl Evans added three hits for the Rattlers (7-14). Jared Jeffries and Steve Cunningham each drove in two for FAMU. Trevor Cameron had an RBI single for the Hornets (4-14).

 

Utah 4, Utah Valley 3

In Salt Lake City, Michael Beltran had three hits and an RBI as Utah edged Utah Valley. Beltran’s run-scoring single in the fifth tied the game at 3-3. Tyler Relf followed with a base hit to plate the game-winner for the Utes (11-13). A two-run single by Jake Rickenbach in the fourth had given the Wolverines (5-18-1) a 3-2 lead.
