NC State
named CBI Louisville Slugger Team of Week
NC State went 5-0, including 3-0 at Baseball at the Beach in
Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Wolfpack has been named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com
Louisville Slugger Team of the Week.
NC State won a pair of home games against New Mexico State during
the week, 9-2 on Wednesday and 8-3 on Thursday. The Wolfpack then hit the road
for Baseball at the Beach, defeating UMBC 5-3 on Friday before a pair of
10-inning victories, 2-1 against Sun Belt-favorite Florida Atlantic on Saturday
and 5-4 over Big South-favorite Coastal Carolina on Sunday. NC State improved to
10-1 on the season.
Regional Teams of the Week
Northeast: Dartmouth began its
season by winning the Dairy Queen Classic at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The
Big Green beat host Minnesota of the Big Ten 10-3 on Friday evening. Dartmouth
edged Northern Illinois of the MAC 1-0 on Saturday before defeating Utah of the
Pac-12 5-2 on Sunday.
Southeast: South Carolina went 3-1,
starting the week with a 5-2 win over Furman on Tuesday. The Gamecocks won the
intense in-state series with Clemson. South Carolina won 6-0 at Clemson on
Friday. The Tigers rallied for a 6-3 victory in Greenville on Saturday before
the Gamecocks clinched the series win with an 8-0 shutout in Columbia on Sunday
to improve to 8-2.
Central: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
went 4-0 at home, with wins over the two favorites in the WAC. The Islanders
starting with a 7-3 win over Texas State on Tuesday. The Islanders swept a
three-game series from WAC-favorite Dallas Baptist, winning 5-1 on Friday, 6-3
on Saturday and 11-10 on Sunday.
West: Stanford continued to have success with its strong schedule, going
4-0 for the week. The Cardinal won 7-2 at Saint Mary’s on Tuesday before
sweeping a three-game home set from Texas. Stanford won 2-0 on Friday, 7-2 on
Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday.
Honorable Mention
Cal State Fullerton took two of
three at home from No. 7 Oregon.
San Diego went 4-0 on an East Coast
trip, winning at Coastal Carolina before going 3-0 at UNCW’s tourney. The
Toreros beat Gardner-Webb, the host Seahawks and Stony Brook.
Presbyterian went 4-0, starting with
a win against Wofford. The Blue Hose, picked to finish last in the South
Division of the Big South, swept a three-game conference set from High Point.
Arizona State went 3-0-1 in the
Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz., with two wins over No. 2 Arkansas, a
victory over Pacific and a tie against Gonzaga.
Towson headed south and took two of
three at Duke of the ACC.
North Carolina went 4-0, winning at
home against St. John’s before winning three at the Astros Foundation College
Classic. The Tar Heels topped Rice, Cal and Texas A&M.
Mississippi State went 6-0 at home,
with two wins over Rhode Island and four against Saint Joseph’s to improve to
15-0.
Connecticut went 3-0 at the
Brighthouse Invitational with victories over Ohio State, Central Michigan and
host Stetson.
Rider put together a 4-0 week,
winning at Norfolk State before taking three at Radford.
North Florida enjoyed a 5-0 week,
starting with a win at Florida before posting a pair of home victories over
Jacksonville State and Charleston Southern.
