Pittsburgh named CBI Louisville Slugger Team of
Week
Pittsburgh went on the road and swept a three-game series at
Wichita State. The Panthers have been named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com
Louisville Slugger Team of the Week.
Pitt defeated the Shockers 6-4 on Friday, the first home loss
ever for WSU in February. The Shockers had been 69-0 all-time at home in
February. The Panthers won 10-8 on Saturday to secure a series victory. Pitt
completed the sweep with an 11-3 decision on Sunday, becoming the first team in
43 years to sweep a three-game series at Wichita State. The last was Creighton
in 1970.
Regional Teams of the Week
Northeast: Towson headed south and
swept a three-game series at McNeese State. The Tigers took the opener 12-5 on
Friday before clinching a series win with a 10-9 decision on Saturday. Towson
completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory on Sunday for its best start since 2004.
Southeast: Ole Miss withstood an
invasion by No. 13 TCU, sweeping the three-game set. The Rebels eked out a 1-0
win on Friday before claiming consecutive 5-2 contests on Saturday and Sunday.
Central: Rice survived a battle of
titans, taking two of three at home from No. 6 Stanford. The Owls took the
series opener 5-1 on Friday before the Cardinal evened the series with a 3-2
decision on Saturday. Rice claimed the deciding game on Sunday, 3-0.
West: San Diego State was an
inhospitable guest, sweeping a three-game series at No. 20 San Diego in its new
home of Fowler Park. The Aztecs took an 8-1 victory on Friday before wins of 4-2
on Saturday and 5-3 on Sunday.
Honorable Mention
Virginia Tech went 4-0 at UNC
Wilmington’s tournament, going 2-0 against the host Seahawks and 2-0 against
2012 CWS participant Kent State.
Creighton swept a three-game series
at Dallas Baptist for the opening of Horner Ballpark.
Georgia Southern rebounded from a
Friday loss to win the next two and win the home series against Georgia of the
SEC.
Appalachian State won at No. 10 NC
State on Friday before the remaining two games of the series were snowed out.
Mercer went 3-0 at the Snowbird
Classic in Sarasota, Fla., posting victories over Ohio State, St. John’s and
Notre Dame.
Saint Louis won two of three at Oral
Roberts, winning Friday and Saturday before falling on Sunday to miss the sweep.
Oklahoma State hit the road and
outscored New Mexico in two of three games, including a 15-14 win in 13 innings
on Saturday to clinch the series victory..
UC Irvine swept a three-game home
series from Baylor, the Big 12 regular-season champion from a season ago.
Virginia traveled south and took two
at East Carolina. Saturday’s game was snowed out.
Saint Joseph’s hit the road and
took two of three at Stetson of the Atlantic Sun.
