Florida Atlantic named CBI Team of the Week
Florida
Atlantic, picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Conference by the head
coaches, swept a three-game series at Alabama of the SEC. The Owls have been
named the initial 2012 CollegeBaseballInsider.com Team of the Week.
Florida Atlantic, under head coach John McCormack (right),
started the weekend with a 5-2 win over the Crimson Tide on Friday. The Owls
followed that with a 9-2 victory on Saturday and completed the sweep with a 9-4
decision on Sunday.
Regional Teams of the Week
Northeast: Boston College went 3-0
in the Caravelle Resort Tournament in South Carolina. The Eagles topped Virginia
5-3 on Friday to kick off the weekend. BC beat CAA favorite James Madison 8-5
and Big South favorite Coastal Carolina 8-3, both on Saturday.
Southeast: Maryland went to the West
Coast and won its series at No. 17 UCLA. The Terps won 2-1 on Friday and fell
6-5 on Saturday before claiming the series with a 5-1 victory on Sunday.
Central: Purdue was the only Big Ten
team to go undefeated in the Big East-Big Ten Challenge. The Boilermakers beat
Connecticut 9-4 and Cincinnati 6-0, both on Saturday, before outscoring Notre
Dame 15-8 on Sunday.
West: Santa Clara was picked to
finish last in the West Coast Conference, but claimed three wins at the
CenturyLink Bobcat Invitational. The Broncos defeated host and Southland
favorite Texas State 5-4 in 13 innings and Wichita State 7-1, both on Saturday.
Santa Clara topped Louisiana-Lafayette 8-5 on Sunday.
Honorable Mention
Stanford swept Vanderbilt at home,
outscoring the Commodores 35-13 in three contests.
Pepperdine took two of three at home
from No. 16 Oklahoma.
Liberty went 4-0 in The Citadel
Memorial Challenge, taking two from Towson and defeating Richmond and The
Citadel.
Cal Poly swept a three-game set from
Oklahoma State of the Big 12.
USF claimed three wins in the Big
East-Big Ten Challenge, defeating Ohio State, Michigan State and Minnesota.
Sam Houston State took two of three
from WCC favorite San Diego.
College of Charleston swept a
three-game series at South Alabama.
Rider headed south and won three of
four at Norfolk State.
