Team of the Week
Southern
Miss went 4-0 this past week, including a Conference USA series sweep of East
Carolina, and was named CollegeBaseballInsider.com Team of the Week.
The Golden Eagles started the week with a 14-3 victory over
Mississippi State Wednesday at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. Southern Miss then
took three from the Pirates, 14-4 on Friday, 8-2 on Saturday and 7-6 on Sunday
to move into second in Conference USA. The Eagles stretched their win streak to
11 and moved into the 50s in RPI, back into the picture for an at-large bid to
the NCAA Tournament.
Honorable Mention goes to Oregon State, which swept a three-game
Pac-10 set from in-state rival No. 17 Oregon. All three were one-run contests
and two went extra innings. Fresno State bounced back from a loss to Cal Poly to
sweep a four-game WAC set at first-place New Mexico State to move into second, a
half-game behind the Aggies. Dartmouth won two of three at Columbia to capture
the Ivy League Championship and claim the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament. Murray State took three from Eastern Kentucky to move into first
place in the OVC. Kentucky won two of three at No. 6 South Carolina. No. 12
Arkansas took two of three at No. 14 Ole Miss. Liberty went 5-0 with a win at
George Mason and a win over Maryland before sweeping a three-game Big South set
at Charleston Southern to extend its win streak to eight. FGCU rebounded from a
loss at Clemson to beat ETSU three times. No. 1 Texas beat Prairie View A&M
before taking two of three at Kansas State to clinch the Big 12 regular-season
crown. San Diego beat UC Riverside before sweeping three at Portland to stay
undefeated in the WCC. No. 10 Louisville won twice at Ohio State prior to
winning two of three at Georgetown. UCLA won at Pepperdine before taking three
at Washington. Vanderbilt took two of three at No. 20 LSU. Binghamton swept a
four-game America East set from Albany to stretch its win streak to eight.
Xavier took two of three from first-place Charlotte to move into a fourth-place
tie in the Atlantic 10. Georgia State won two of three in CAA play at UNC
Wilmington. Canisius beat Niagara before taking three from Manhattan to stay in
first in the MAAC. Sacred Heart won three of four at Wagner to climb into second
in the NEC. College of Charleston took two of three from first-place The Citadel
in the Southern Conference. Elon lost at North Carolina before winning at UNC
Wilmington and sweeping three from Appalachian State. Illinois State swept three
at Missouri State to stay in first in the MVC. South Dakota State took three of
four from Oral Roberts. No. 15 Cal State Fullerton swept a three-game Big West
set from UC Riverside.
