Anthony
Shawler (Chesapeake, Va.)
Old Dominion junior pitcher
Shawler pitched a two-hit shutout Friday in a 10-0 CAA victory
over Northeastern. He tied a school record with 18 strikeouts and fanned seven
straight at one point. The right-hander walked one, allowed one runner to reach
second and none to reach third. Shawler held the Huskies hitless until a leadoff
single in the sixth. The second hit was a single in the ninth. Shawler raised
his record to 5-2 and has 83 strikeouts in 64 innings.
Regional Players of the Week
East
Steve Miller (Ocala, Fla.)
Princeton senior pitcher
Miller tossed a seven-inning no-hitter against Cornell on Sunday
in his final Ivy League appearance. He surrendered six walks and allowed a pair
of unearned runs in the first. The right-hander struck out 10 in raising his
record to 3-2. It was the 13th no-hitter in Princeton history.
Alex Silverman (Wilmington, N.C.)
Brown senior pitcher
On Senior Day, Silverman struck out 16 in seven innings against
Yale, his first career complete game in his final Ivy league start. The
right-hander allowed two hits, an infield single in the first and a leadoff
single in the second. Silverman walked five and was one strikeout away from the
school record.
Southeast
Ty Wright (Montrose, Ga.)
Georgia Southern junior designated hitter
Wright batted .500 (12-24) with five doubles, one triple, two
homers, seven runs and 12 RBI in leading the Eagles to a 5-0 week. He hit for
the cycle in consecutive innings on Sunday against Wofford with a single in the
first, a two-run homer in the second, an RBI triple in the third and a two-run
double in the fourth. Wright had a game-winning two-run double in the 11th
in a 6-4 win at Kennesaw State earlier in the week.
Central
Nick Nordgren (Norway, Iowa)
Creighton junior outfielder
Nordgren had three home runs and 12 RBI in five games for the
Bluejays. He had a two-run homer on Tuesday at Nebraska and had a three-run shot
with five RBI on Wednesday against the Huskers at Rosenblatt Stadium. Nordgren
drove in three on Friday in MVC play against Evansville and capped the week with
a two-run bomb against the Purple Aces on Sunday to complete the series sweep.
West
Stephen Strasburg (San Diego, Calif.)
San Diego State sophomore pitcher
Strasburg pitched a one-hitter against TCU in the 4-1 Mountain
West win last Friday with 13 strikeouts. The right-hander retired the first 18
batters before surrendering a leadoff double in the seventh. A wild pitch and a
groundout led to the Horned Frog’s run. Strasburg allowed his only walk later in
the frame. He retired the side in order over the final two innings to secure the
victory.
