20 Former Division I Players on
World Series Rosters
There
are 20 former Division I players among the 50 major leaguers
listed on the World Series rosters, two more than the total of
18 for each of the past two years.
The San Francisco Giants have 11
former Division I players on their 25-man World Series roster.
The Detroit Tigers have nine, including Justin Verlander (right)
from Old Dominion.
There are 20 Division I schools which have at
least one alum in the postseason. There is no school with
multiple players.
Arkansas is the only school to have
had alums in each of the past four World Series. Former Razorback
Drew Smyly is a pitcher with the Detroit Tigers. Craig Gentry was an outfielder with
the Texas Rangers last year, while Cliff Lee
pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 and for Texas in
2010.
There are four who played in the Pac-10, three
from the ACC and SEC, two from the Big 12 and one each from the
Big East, Big Ten, Colonial, Missouri Valley, Mountain West,
Southland, WAC and West Coast.
