Feb. 13-19, 2012
Duke sophomore Chris Marconcini will miss the
2012 season due to a torn ACL in his right knee, suffered during
an intrasquad game. Marconcini was a Freshman All-American,
batting .291 in 55 starts with 15 doubles, six triples, four
homers, 41 runs and 39 RBI. He hit .383 with runners in scoring
position.
Ground was recently broken for the Furman
Baseball Complex, which represents Phase 1 of $3.5 million in
facility enhancements at Latham Stadium. The complex will
include coaches’ offices, locker rooms, player lounge, training
and equipment rooms, and indoor batting and pitching cages.
Construction should be completed by August, 2012. Phase 2
includes a new press box, concourse, concessions, restrooms and
additional chair back seating.
Duke will have three captains for the 2012
season: senior outfielder Will Piwnica-Worms, junior
right-hander Marcus Stroman and junior catcher Ryan Munger.
Piwnica-Worms batted .264 a season ago with 15 doubles, 32 runs,
31 RBI and 21 steals in 23 attempts. Stroman, a preseason
All-American, was 3-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 2011 and was second in
the nation with 12.64 strikeouts per nine innings (90 K in 64.1
IP). Munger has started 27 times behind the plate in his first
two seasons with the Blue Devils and has a .218 career batting
average.
Bucknell elected seniors Alex Cillo, David
Duffett and Ryan Ebner as captains. Cillo was Second Team
All-Patriot League in 2011, going 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in 46
innings of relief. Duffett is a two-year starter who hit .286 in
2011 with one homer and 19 RBI while playing at third base.
Ebner was Patriot League Pitcher of the Year this past season,
going 6-1 with a 3.53 ERA in 11 starts.
