Troy swept a doubleheader from the Ontario Blue
Jays on Sunday, Oct. 18, winning 6-3 and 20-2. Ryan Ditthardt
went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI in the opener for the
Trojans. Chad Watson went deep for Troy in the opener. Steven
Rosado belted three homers and drove in six in the nightcap.
Jake Sullivan went 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBI.
Ditthardt went 3 for 3 with three runs. Adam Bryant had two hits
and drove in three.
Members of the Duke baseball team volunteered at
the Miracle League of the Triangle, helping more than 50
children with special needs participate in baseball games at
Adam Elementary School. The league has grown to 18 teams, 200
children and 500 volunteers. The primary goals of the Miracle
League are providing opportunities to all children with special
needs to play baseball, regardless of their abilities, and to
increase community awareness and support for those children.
Ryan Fleming had two homers and knocked in six as
Georgia State thumped the Ontario Blue Jays 15-1 on Saturday,
Oct. 17. A total of 11 pitchers combined to allow six hits with
15 strikeouts. Carter Sackett went 2 for 5 with two runs and two
RBI. Joey Wood went 2 for 3 with three runs and three stolen
bases.
Gabe Gross smacked 26 home
runs to the annual Auburn Home Run Derby. An event record of
$5,044.75 was raised for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lee
County. A total of 1,715 fans attended the event. Gross hit 15
home runs in the first round, matching the total of Kevin
Patterson. Ryan Jenkins and David Ross each hit nine to advance
to the finals. Gross had 11 homers in the finals to win the
event. Other celebrities in attendance included Bo Jackson, Tim
Hudson, Frank Sanders, Coach Hal Baird and Todd Jones.
UT Arlington head coach Darin Thomas has received
a two-year contract extension through the 2013 season. Thomas
has led the Mavericks to 56 wins in the past two years and has
guided UT Arlington to wins over eight nationally-ranked
opponents. The program has recorded a 3.0 team grade-point
average for four consecutive semesters. This past spring, 20 of
33 baseball student-athletes were named to the Honor Roll with
at least a 3.0 GPA for the semester.
LSU will participate in two community service
projects on Saturday, Oct. 17. Some players will participate in
the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk on campus, while
others will take part in the ALS Walk to promote awareness of
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s
Disease.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi expects nearly 30 former
players to return for the second annual alumni game at
newly-renovated Chapman Field. The game will be Saturday, Oct.
17, at 1:30 p.m., with a cookout following the contest.
The Southern Miss 2009 College World Series team
will be recognized on Saturday, Oct. 17, at halftime of the
Memphis football game. The players will be presented their
championship rings with a video tribute to the season.
The Baylor scrimmage against Temple College,
scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, was postponed due to inclement
weather. The game is expected to be rescheduled.
