Tracy Smith is in his eighth season as head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers. IU went 32-28 this past season, including 14-7 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers fell 6-5 to Purdue in the Championship Game of the Big Ten Tournament. A native of Kentland, Ind., Smith led Indiana to the 2009 Big Ten tourney title, the first for the program since 1996 and second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

A 1989 graduate of Miami (Ohio), Smith posted a record of 317-220-1 (.590) as head coach at his alma mater. His RedHawks put together eight consecutive 30-win seasons.

Smith has a keen eye for baseball and a keen ear for music. He will give us his thoughts through the spring on Indiana baseball and on American Idol. Follow Smith on Twitter at @HoosierBaseball.

The Hoosiers are 34-8 overall and ranked No. 16 in the CBI Composite Poll with an RPI of 13. IU is tied with Nebraska for second in the Big Ten at 11-4 and faced the Huskers in Lincoln this weekend.

Lost and Found

Long time . . . no posts. As much as I hate excuses, I am going to give you one. I have been busy. Yes, too busy to sit down and watch (what used to be) my favorite show – American Idol;  let alone write a journal entry about it. Plus, I confess that I spend my “TV time” watching Lost on Netflix. I am hooked.

It has been a great busy, though. We dedicated a new stadium – Bart Kaufman Field – last weekend, we have cracked and maintained a Top 20 national ranking, and we have been playing some Big Ten Baseball. The guys are in the process of finishing final exams before we head to Nebraska this weekend for an important series. Sometimes you simply have to prioritize and focus on what is important, and right now, that is trying to win baseball games. I remember someone telling me that when Phil Jackson feels like “things” are building up and taking away from his job as a coach, he just eliminates it. Well, I kind of did the same thing, and American Idol was one of the non-essentials that got cut. Granted, I will admit (and have in previous blogs), it probably has to do with my distaste for some of the judges (the one that rhymes with sticky) as much as being too busy.

That said, I did catch a little bit of the show last night as I peered over the top of my IPad (Lost, season 3, episode 19) while my wife watched the Idol contestants battle. I was quickly reminded why I didn’t like this season as “the one that rhymes with sticky” handed out more annoying comments and insights. Plus, they voted off Amber, who I think has the best chance to be a super star when the show concludes . . . just not a good year for Idol and me.

Well, before I shut it down, let me show you the new digs. I hope Phil and the folks at Collegebaseballinsider.com can share this link with you.  It is an aerial view of Bart Kaufman Field last weekend during our dedication game. Enjoy the ride!
