2013 Coaching Changes

 

Schmack Promoted to Head Coach at Valparaiso

 

Brian Schmack has been elevated to head coach at Valparaiso.

 

Schmack has been pitching coach for the Crusaders for the past seven seasons. He helped Valparaiso win consecutive Horizon League titles the past two seasons. Following the 2010 campaign, Schmack was promoted to associate head coach.

 

During his seven years with the Crusaders, Schmack has coached six all-league pitchers, including a pair of Pitchers of the Year and one Relief Pitcher of the Year. In each of the past two seasons, Valparaiso has been ranked in the Top 10 nationally in fewest walks per nine innings.

 

From 1992-95, Schmack pitched at Northern Illinois University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Valparaiso in 2009.

 

Schmack pitched professionally from 1995-2004. He started out with the Newark Bison of the Frontier League before playing the in the Chicago White Sox, Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers organizations. Schmack reached the Major Leagues in 2003, going 1-0 in 11 games with the Tigers with a 3.46 ERA. His big league victory came against Cleveland on Sept. 2, 2003.

 

Schmack replaces Tracy Woodson, who resigned to take the head coaching position at Richmond.
