Smith Promoted at UNC Asheville
Tom Smith has been named head coach at UNC
Asheville.
Smith, 54, has been an assistant with the
Bulldogs the past two seasons. He was a volunteer assistant in
2008 and an assistant this past season.
Before coming to UNCA, Smith spent 28 years as
head coach at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville. He led the
Rams to state titles in 1983, 2000 and 2002. Smith had a record
of 478-185 at Roberson. He had 20 players drafted from Roberson,
including Darren Holmes, who pitched for 17 years in the major
leagues, current left-hander Chris Narveson of the Milwaukee
Brewers, and outfielder Cameron Maybin of the Florida Marlins, a
first-round pick in 2005.
UNC Asheville was 9-42 in 2009, including 5-21 in
the Big South.
