Jancuska resigns at UMBC
John Jancuska has resigned after 34 years at
UMBC.
With a record of 673-719-6 in 34 seasons with the
Retrievers, Jancuska guided UMBC to five NCAA tournament
appearances. Jancuska was named Coach of the Year in all four of
UMBC’s conference at the Division I level. He was inducted into
the UMBC Athletics’ Hall of Fame in 2010.
Jancuska was hired by UMBC in 1978 at the age of
23. His first two squads reached the NCAA Division II regionals,
as did his final team in 1986. UMBC joined Division I in 1987.
Jancuska was named Coach of the Year in the East Coast
Conference, the Big South Conference, the Northeast Conference
and the America East Conference. He was named Coach of the Year
in the state of Maryland in 1993 and was inducted into the
Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in
2000.
The Retrievers were 10-37 this past season,
including 2-20 in America East.
A two-year starter at the University of Delaware,
Jancuska was a co-captain as a senior in 1975.
Jancuska will remain with the UMBC Department of
Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation in 2011-12,
teaching classes in the physical education program.
