Esmay Named Interim Head Coach at Arizona State

Arizona State has named Tim Esmay interim head coach. He replaces Pat Murphy, who recently announced his resignation.

An assistant for the Sun Devils for the past five seasons, Esmay was an infielder for ASU under Jim Brock in 1986 and 1987.

Esmay was head coach at Utah from 1997-2004, compiling a record of 213-235-1. The Utes won the WAC title in 1997 and Esmay was named WAC Coach of the Year. He had 27 players earn all-conference honors and 18 advanced to play professional baseball.

An All-American at Scottsdale Community College before batting .305 in two years with the Sun Devils, Esmay was a member of ASU’s 1987 College World Series team. Esmay was an assistant with the Sun Devils from 1988-90. He coached at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix from 1992-93 and was an assistant at Grand Canyon University in 1995 and Utah in 1996 before becoming head coach of the Utes in 1997.

Esmay returned to Tempe in 2005 as an assistant, helping ASU win three straight Pac-10 titles and making two trips to the College World Series.
