Vanderbilt climbs to No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

Texas A&M drops to No. 2, LSU up to third, TCU falls to fourth, UCLA fifth

After putting together a 5-0 week, Vanderbilt has risen to the top spot in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

CBI uses five national rankings in its composite poll: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, D1baseball.com, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Commodores are the fifth different team to sit at No. 1 in the past five weeks, joining Virginia, TCU, LSU and Texas A&M. Vanderbilt took two from Wofford at home before sweeping a three-game SEC series at Georgia. The Commodores were first in three polls and second in the other two.

Texas A&M went 3-0 and slipped one spot to second. The Aggies won at home against Sam Houston State before taking two at Kentucky. As it was a week ago, Texas A&M was first in two polls and second in the other three.

LSU had a 4-0 week and rose one place to third. The Tigers won against UL Lafayette before sweeping a three-game set at Alabama. LSU was third in three polls and fourth in the other two.

TCU went 2-2 and fell one spot to fourth. The Horned Frogs lost at UT Arlington before taking two of three at Texas Tech. TCU was third in one poll, fourth in two polls, fifth in one poll and sixth in the other.

UCLA went 2-1 and moved up one spot to fifth. The Bruins took two of three at home from Oregon State. UCLA was third in one poll, fourth in one poll, fifth in one poll, sixth in one poll and seventh in the other.

Maryland (No. 17) and Missouri (No. 20) entered to the poll this week, while South Carolina and Houston dropped out. No. 7 USC and No. 16 Illinois both rose four places, while Virginia fell seven spots to No. 19.

The CBI Composite Poll contains five teams from the SEC, including the top three. There are four from the ACC, three from the Pac-12, two from the Big Ten and Big 12, and one from the American, Big West, Conference USA and Missouri Valley.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Rice is No. 12 in one poll, No. 22 in another.
