Cavaliers Keep Top Ranking in CBI Composite Poll

Oregon State stays second, ULL still third, FSU fourth, Cal Poly fifth

After 4-0 week at home, including a three-game ACC sweep of Georgia Tech, Virginia stayed No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

CBI used five rankings in its composite poll: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game and USA Today Coaches Poll.

Following final exams, the Cavaliers began the week with an 8-2 victory over a hot Liberty squad on Wednesday. Virginia won three close games against the Yellow Jackets over the weekend, 4-3 on both Friday and Saturday before a 3-1 triumph on Sunday. The Cavaliers were first in three polls and second in the other two.

Oregon State had a 4-0 week to remain in second. The Beavers won at Oregon on Tuesday before sweeping a Pac-12 series from defending national champion UCLA. OSU was first in two polls, second in two polls and third in the other.

Louisiana-Lafayette went 3-0 at No. 3. The Ragin' Cajuns won three times at South Alabama in Sun Belt play. ULL was second in one poll and third in the other four.

Florida State went 3-1 and held onto fourth. The Seminoles were victorious at Stetson before winning two of three at North Carolina in ACC action. FSU was fourth in four polls and fifth in the other.

Cal Poly had an impressive 3-1 week to climb one spot to fifth. The Mustangs defeated West Coast Conference leader Pepperdine on Tuesday before taking two of three from first-place UC Irvine in a key Big West series. Cal Poly was fifth in one poll, sixth in three polls and 12th in the other.

Houston was the top gainer of the week, rising three places to No. 16. Florida fell five spots to No. 10.

The CBI Composite Poll contains six teams from the SEC. There are three from the ACC and Pac-12, two from the American and Big 12, and single entries from the Big Ten, Big West, Conference USA and Sun Belt.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Indiana is No. 8 in one poll, No. 18 in two others.
