Titans are No. 1 in CBI Preseason Composite Poll
Oregon State sits in second, Virginia is third, Mississippi
State stands fourth
After
falling at home to eventual national champion UCLA in the 2013 Fullerton Super
Regional, Cal State Fullerton starts the 2014 season at No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason Composite
Poll.
CBI uses five national rankings in its
composite poll: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, National
Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game and USA Today
Coaches Poll.
The Titans, under head coach Rick Vanderhook (pictured above), were the No. 5
national seed a season ago and hosted the Bruins in the Fullerton Super
Regional. UCLA took the opener 5-3 in 10 innings before sweeping the two-game
set with a 3-0 victory. Cal State Fullerton finished the 2013 campaign with a
51-10 mark. The Titans were first in three polls, second in one poll and
fourth in the other.
Oregon State placed second in the CBI Composite Poll. The
Beavers reached the College World Series a year ago, finishing in a tie for
third in the nation and posting a 52-13 mark. OSU
was second in one poll, third in three polls and fourth in the other poll.
Virginia checked in at No. 3. The Cavaliers dropped a pair of
games to national runner-up Mississippi State in the Charlottesville Super
Regional, falling 11-6 in the opener and 6-5 in the finale to finish 50-12.
Virginia was first in two polls, second in one, sixth in one and 12th in the
other.
Mississippi State held down the fourth spot. The Bulldogs
finished second to UCLA in the College World Series a season ago, registering
a 51-20 record. MSU is second in one poll, fourth in two, sixth in one and
eighth in the other.
Florida State came in at No. 5. The Seminoles were the No. 7
national seed before dropping two games to Indiana in the Tallahassee Super
Regional. FSU was fourth in one poll, fifth in three polls and sixth in the
other.
Defending national champion UCLA is No. 12 in the CBI
Composite Poll. The Bruins were ranked as high as eighth and as low as No.
15.
The CBI Preseason Composite Poll contains six teams from the ACC. There
are five from the SEC, four from the Pac-12 and single entries
from the American, Big Ten, Big 12, Big West and Conference USA.
