North Carolina moves to No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

Arkansas drops to second, Vanderbilt stays in third, LSU remains fourth

After going 2-0 at home against Seton Hall, North Carolina rises to No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll does not have its first in-season poll until next week, so this week's CBI Composite Poll uses the remaining four rankings for its compilation.

The Tar Heels, under head coach Mike Fox (pictured), defeated the Pirates 1-0 to open the season on Friday on a complete game by All-American Kent Emanuel. Saturday's contest was snowed out before UNC posted a 17-2 win on Sunday. The Tar Heels are first in all four polls.

Preseason No. 1 Arkansas went 2-1 in Fayetteville against Western Illinois and dropped one place to second. The Razorbacks are second in two polls and third in the other two.

Vanderbilt took two of three at home against Long Beach State to stay in third. The Commodores are second in one poll, third in two polls and fourth in the other.

LSU swept a three-game set from Maryland in Baton Rouge to remain in fourth. The Tigers are second in one poll, fourth in two polls and ninth in the other.

UCLA went 2-1 at home against Minnesota to hold at No. 5. The Bruins are fifth in one poll, sixth in two polls and 12th in the other.

Two teams make their 2013 debut in the CBI Composite Poll. Rice won two of three against then-No. 6 Stanford to check in at No. 13. Ole Miss swept a three-game set from previous No. 13 TCU and sits at No. 14. The Horned Frogs fell out of the poll as did San Diego, which was swept at home by San Diego State.

The CBI Composite Poll contains eight teams from the SEC, including three of the top four. There are five from the Pac-12, four from the ACC and single entries from the Big East, Big 12 and Conference USA.

About the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll

The CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll weighs the five primary national polls, thereby providing the most accurate national ranking. In case of ties in the composite ranking, the team with a higher individual ranking will come first.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Louisville is No. 4 in one poll, No. 26 in another.

Preseason Poll: 1. Arkansas, 2. North Carolina, 3. Vanderbilt, 4. LSU, 5. UCLA
