South Carolina finishes No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

Florida stays second, Virginia, Vanderbilt, UNC round out Top 5

 

After winning its second consecutive national championship, South Carolina claimed the top spot in the final CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

 

The Gamecocks were a perfect 10-0 in the NCAA Tournament, going 3-0 in the Columbia Regional, 2-0 in the Columbia Super Regional and 5-0 in the College World Series. South Carolina is No. 1 in all four national polls.

 

Florida finished second to South Carolina in Omaha and finished No. 2. The Gators were second in all four polls.

 

Virginia reached the CWS for the second time in the past three seasons and placed third. The Cavaliers went 2-2 in Omaha, with both losses coming to the Gamecocks. Virginia was third in three polls and fourth in the other.

 

Vanderbilt made its first appearance in Omaha and finished No. 4 in the CBI Composite Poll. The Commodores posted a 2-2 CWS mark, with both defeats at the hands of Florida. Vanderbilt was third in one poll and fourth in the other three.

 

North Carolina also reached the College World Series and was fifth in the CBI Poll. The Tar Heels have advanced to Omaha in five of the past six seasons. UNC was fifth in all four national polls.

 

Several teams used strong postseason runs to earn a spot in the final poll. California reached the College World Series and finished eighth. Connecticut was No. 13, Stanford was No. 14, Mississippi State was No. 16 and Dallas Baptist finished at No. 19.

 

There are four teams from the ACC, Pac-10 and SEC in the final poll. There are two teams from  the Big 12 and Big West. There are single teams from the Big East, Conference USA and Mountain West, and one independent team.
