LSU remains on top of the CBI Composite Poll

Florida State rises to second, Virginia falls to third, Arizona State up to fourth

By sitting on top of three of the national polls, the LSU Tigers remain No. 1 in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The defending national champion, LSU is first in the Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN polls and second in the Baseball America poll. The Tigers, led by head coach Paul Mainieri (right), defeated Pepperdine twice and Brown twice in the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge.

The ACC holds down three of the next four spots. Florida State moved up one spot to No. 2. The Seminoles are second in two polls, third in one and fifth in the other. FSU defeated Florida on Tuesday in Tampa and swept a three-game series from Georgia in Tallahassee.

Virginia dropped one place to third. The Cavaliers are first in the Baseball America poll and fourth in the other three polls. Virginia took two from Dartmouth and split a pair with Wright State in the Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville.

Arizona State went 4-0 in the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz., to jump one spot to No. 4. The Sun Devils defeated Cal Poly, Oregon State, UC Riverside and FIU.

Georgia Tech rose one place to fifth. The Yellow Jackets swept a three-game set from Rutgers in Atlanta.

UCLA had the largest jump, going from No. 17 to No. 12. The Bruins took three from Nebraska to raise their record to 9-0.

Oklahoma enters the poll at No. 20, while UC Irvine fell out of this week's poll.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Arizona State in No. 2 in one poll, No. 11 in another.
