CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll

UNC, UCI Tied for First in CBI Composite Poll

ASU sits in third, Rice rises to fourth, LSU climbs to fifth

In a season in which teams have had trouble staying at No. 1, that trend continues as North Carolina and UC Irvine displace Arizona State for the top spot in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The Tar Heels (35-11), Anteaters (30-11) and Sun Devils (31-9) all tied with nine points, but in our tie-breaker, UNC and UCI share the top spot for being first in two polls, third in one and fourth in one. ASU is second in three polls and third in one.

UNC went 4-1 this past week, defeating UNC Wilmington, losing at East Carolina and sweeping a three-game ACC series from Maryland. UCI also went 4-1, taking two from Oregon and winning two of three at Utah. ASU was 3-1, beating Hawaii and taking two of three Pac-10 contests at California.

This is the 11th CBI Composite Poll for 2009 and only once has a team stayed at No. 1 for two straight weeks (North Carolina on March 9 and 16). Six different schools have been on top in the past seven weeks (North Carolina, Georgia, Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, LSU and UC Irvine).

Rice (28-10) won at Texas on Tuesday in its lone game of the week to climb two spots to No. 4. The Owls did not play over the weekend due to final exams.

LSU (33-11) enjoyed a 5-0 week, with wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana-Lafayette before a three-game SEC sweep of Auburn to rise three spots to fifth.

Texas (29-11-1) went 0-3-1 to drop seven places to No. 11. Baylor (25-17) had an 0-5 week to fall 10 spots to No. 22.

Two teams climbed back into the poll: No. 21 Kansas State (31-11-1) and No. 23 East Carolina (32-13).

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Florida State is No. 9 in two polls, No. 19 in another poll.
