Arizona State returns to No. 1 in CBI Composite
Poll
UNC jumps to second, UC Irvine climbs to third, Texas up to
fourth
After sweeping a three-game Pac-10 series from Stanford this past week, Arizona
State has climbed back into the top spot in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.
The Sun Devils (28-8) claim the top spot in the composite poll
despite not being No. 1 in any of the four national polls. ASU is second in two
polls and third in the other two.
This is the 10th CBI Composite Poll for 2009 and only once has a
team stayed at No. 1 for two straight weeks (North Carolina on March 9 and 16).
Five different schools have been on top in the past six weeks (North Carolina,
Georgia, Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State and LSU).
North Carolina (31-10) bounced back from a loss to High Point on
Tuesday to beat Winthrop and sweep a three-game ACC set from Miami (Fla.). The
Tar Heels jumped from sixth to second. UNC is No. 1 in the NCBWA poll.
UC Irvine (26-10) went 4-1 this past week to climb two spots to
No. 3. The Anteaters defeated Loyola Marymount on Monday before losing at San
Diego on Tuesday. UCI swept a three-game Big West series at UC Riverside to put
a tighter hold on first place. The Anteaters are No. 1 in the Baseball America
and
Collegiate Baseball polls and sixth in the other two polls.
Texas (29-8) went 5-0 this past week to jump four places to No.
4. The Longhorns took two from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before sweeping a
three-game Big 12 series from Oklahoma.
Georgia (31-8) split four games this past week to drop from
third to fifth. The Bulldogs lost at home to Georgia Tech before taking two of
three from SEC-rival Arkansas. Georgia is No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN
Coaches Poll.
.
Georgia Tech (26-8-1) jumped five places to No. 7 after a 5-0
week. LSU (28-11) had a 2-3 week to fall from No. 1 to No. 8.
Three teams climbed back into the poll: No. 18 Texas A&M
(25-14), No. 24 Ohio State (26-7) and No. 25 Alabama (27-13).

Last rank-Last week's composite ranking
Why a composite poll? CBI felt
that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that
make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Florida
State is No.
10 in one poll, No. 21 in another poll.
