South Carolina outscores LSU in SEC series opener

Rutgers knocks off Iowa, Northeastern edges College of Charleston in 10

 

South Carolina 10, No. 1 LSU 7

In Columbia, S.C., Elliott Caldwell drew a bases-loaded walk to snap a 6-6 tie and spark a four-run seventh as South Carolina claimed the SEC series opener from LSU. DC Arendas (2 for 3, 3 RBI) and Max Schrock (3 for 4, 2 R) both homered, while Hunter Taylor (2 for 3) drove in three for the Gamecocks (13-15, 32-22). Reed Scott (2-3, 3 IP, 3 H, R, BB, K) earned the victory. Chris Chinea went 4 for 5 with a homer, two runs and three RBI for the Tigers (19-8, 44-9).

 

Rutgers 5, No. 15 Iowa 3

In Piscataway, N.J., Howie Brey went the distance as Rutgers won the Big Ten series opener against Iowa. Brey (3-7) allowed nine hits and three runs with four walks and two strikeouts. Tom Marcinczyk had a two-run single to spark a three-run third, while Vinny Zarrillo (2 for 4) drove in two with a double for the Scarlet Knights (6-16, 18-34-1). Nick Roscetti had three hits and two RBI for the Hawkeyes (18-4, 37-13).

 

Northeastern 5, No. 19 College of Charleston 4 (10)

In Brookline, Mass., Rob Fonseca belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to erase a 4-2 deficit as Northeastern won the CAA series opener. Michael Foster and Keith Kelly had consecutive one-out singles in the 10th for the Huskies (14-8, 24-26) before the long ball by Fonseca. Erven Roper (2 for 3, 2 R) singled and scored in the top of the 10th, while Champ Rowland added an RBI single later in the frame as the Cougars (19-3, 39-11) took a 4-2 lead. Bradley Jones went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for CofC.

 

No. 2 Louisville 4, NC State 3

In Raleigh, N.C., Sutton Whiting and Logan Taylor both drove in two as Louisville edged NC State in the ACC series lid-lifter. Kyle Funkhouser (7-4, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 7 K) earned the win, while Zack Burdi (2 IP, H, BB, 3 K) recorded his eighth save. Chance Shepard had a two-run homer in the fourth for the Wolfpack (14-13, 30-19), who stranded 12.

 

No. 4 TCU 5, Oklahoma 4

In Norman, Okla., Derek Odell had a one-out single and scored on an error in the top of the ninth to snap a 4-4 tie and lead TCU to a Big 12 series-opening win at Oklahoma. The Horned Frogs (16-5, 41-9) trailed 4-2 before scoring single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth. Odell, Cody Jones and Keaton Jones each went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, while both Joneses went deep for TCU. Travis Evans (0.1 IP, H) picked up the win, while Riley Ferrell had two walks and two strikeouts in the ninth for his 13th save. Anthony Hermelyn had three hits and three RBI, while Craig Aikin added two hits and two runs for the Sooners (13-9, 32-23).

 

No. 5 Illinois 6, Nebraska 3

In Champaign, Ill., Pat McInerney belted a two-run homer in the fourth as Illinois took the Big Ten series opener from Nebraska to extend its win streak to 25. Adam Walton went 1 for 4 with a double and a run for the Illini (20-1, 44-6-1). Kevin Duchene (10-1, 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Tyler Jay (1.2 IP, BB, 3 K) earned his 11th save. Blake Headley had a three-run homer in the seventh for the Cornhuskers (9-13, 34-20).

 

No. 6 Texas A&M 4, Ole Miss 0

In Oxford, Miss., Grayson Long fanned 12 in seven scoreless innings as Texas A&M took the SEC series opener at Ole Miss. Long (9-0) allowed two hits and walked three. Andrew Vinson walked one and struck out four in two hitless innings to preserve the shutout. The Aggies (18-9, 43-9) scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. Ryne Birk went 2 for 4 with a homer for Texas A&M. Austin Knight and J.B. Woodman each went 1 for 4 with a double for the Rebels (14-14, 29-25).

 

Auburn 4, No. 7 Florida 1

In Gainesville, Fla., Melvin Gray had three hits and three RBI as Auburn won at Florida to kick off their SEC series. Gray had a two-run double in the sixth to erase a 1-0 deficit and added an RBI single to cap a two-run eighth for the Tigers (13-15, 34-20). Cole Lipscomb (7-2, 6.1 IP, 5 H, R, 3 BB, 3 K) earned the victory, while Justin Camp hurled 2.2 hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts to record his eighth save. Mike Rivera went 2 for 3 with a double and a run for the Gators (17-11, 38-15).

 

No. 9 Vanderbilt 2, Alabama 1

In Hoover, Ala., Carson Fulmer struck out a career-best 14 in a complete game as Vanderbilt edged Alabama in the SEC. Fulmer (11-1) allowed two hits and walked four in shutting down the Crimson Tide (11-17, 29-25). Dansby Swanson drove in both runs for the Commodores (19-9, 38-16).

 

No. 10 Miami 3, Georgia Tech 0

In Coral Gables, Fla., Thomas Woodrey tossed a complete-game one-hitter – a singled in the first by Matt Gonzalez – as Miami slipped past Georgia Tech in the ACC. Woodrey (6-1) walked three and struck out seven in his gem, and Christopher Barr went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI for the Hurricanes (20-8, 40-13). Jonathan King allowed three hits and two earned runs for the Yellow Jackets (13-15, 32-20).

 

No. 12 Oklahoma State 12, Michigan 2

In Ann Arbor, Mich., Conor Costello went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBI as Oklahoma State thumped Michigan. Tim Arakawa had two hits and four runs for the Cowboys (33-16). Michael Freeman (9-2) allowed five hits and one unearned run in eight innings with two walks and eight strikeouts to earn the victory. Cody Bruder had two hits and a run for the Wolverines (32-22).
