Reeves helps Rice
complete sweep at Florida Atlantic
Louisville rallies past FSU, ASU nips UCLA,
Columbia wins Ivy crown
No. 20 Rice 5, No. 17 Florida Atlantic 2
In Boca Raton, Fla., John Clay Reeves had a
three-run homer to cap a five-run fifth as Rice completed a
three-game Conference USA sweep at Florida Atlantic. Reeves and
Ford Stainback both had two hits for the visiting Owls (20-7,
33-16). Blake Fox (7-2, 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K)
earned the win, while Matt Ditman (2.2 IP, 2 BB, 3 K) recorded
his ninth save. Brendon Sanger went 1 for 3 with a walk and a
run for FAU (17-10, 36-13).
No. 2 Louisville 6, No. 8 Florida State 5
In Louisville, Ky., Will Smith homered in the
bottom of the eighth to break a 5-5 deadlock as Louisville won
its ACC series against Florida State. The Seminoles (17-10,
37-16) led 5-0 before the Cardinals (23-4, 40-12) scored a pair
in the sixth and Nick Solak (2 for 4, 2 R) smacked a three-run
homer in the seventh to knot the score at 5-5. Zack Burdi (4-0,
2 IP, 2 BB, K) earned the win. Darren Miller (2 for 2, 2 BB, R)
drove in two, while Quincy Nieporte (2 for 4, 2B) scored twice
for FSU.
No. 11 Arizona State 2, No. 4 UCLA 1
In Phoenix, Ariz., Brett Lilek tossed a
three-hitter with seven strikeouts as Arizona State salvaged the
finale of its Pac-12 series with UCLA. Lilek (4-2) walked one
and allowed one unearned run. Johnny Sewald had an RBI single in
the fifth and a run-scoring double in the seventh for the Sun
Devils (15-9, 30-17). Kevin Kramer had two hits fo the Bruins
(18-6, 36-12).
Ivy League Championship
Columbia 10, Dartmouth 7
In New York City, Joe Falcone homered twice and
drove in five as Columbia outscored Dartmouth to win the Ivy
League title and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Falcone (3
for 5) belted a two-run homer in the first and three-run shot in
the second. Logan Boyher (3 for 5, 2 R) also went deep and drove
in four for the Lions (29-15). Harrisen Egly (3-1, 4.2 IP, 3 H,
UE, K) earned the win in relief. Joe Purritano (1 for 3, HR) and
Michael Ketchmark (3 for 5) both knocked in three for the Big
Green (21-22).
No. 1 LSU 6, Missouri 5 (10)
In Baton Rouge, La., Jake Fraley had an RBI
single in the bottom of the 10th as LSU completed a three-game
SEC sweep of Missouri. Conner Hale (3 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) had a
leadoff single in the 10th, moved to third on a base hit by Kade
Scivicque (3 for 5) and came home on the single by Fraley (2 for
5). Chris Chinea homered and drove in two for the home Tigers
(19-7, 43-8). Josh Lester had a three-run homer in the first for
Missouri (14-13, 28-24).
South Carolina 8, No. 2 Texas A&M 7
In College Station, Texas, Kyle Martin went 3 for
5 with a homer and four RBI as South Carolina won its SEC series
at Texas A&M. The Gamecocks (12-15, 30-22) scored three in the
first, four in the fifth and one in the sixth in building an 8-2
lead. Elliott Caldwell had two hits and two RBI for USC. Logan
Nottebrok had a three-run homer in the sixth for the Aggies
(17-9, 42-9), while Blake Allemand and Jonathan Moroney added
solo shots.
No. 6 Illinois 28, Rutgers 13
In Champaign, Ill., Reid Roper had two homers,
six runs and six RBI as Illinois swept its Big Ten series from
Rutgers and extended its win streak to 24 games. The Illini
(19-1, 43-6-1) scored multiple runs in six of their eight
at-bats, including 11 in the eighth. Jason Goldstein went 5 for
5 with three runs and four RBI, while Pat McInerney also drove
in four for Illinois. Tom Marcinczyk (2 for 3, 3 R, 4 RBI) went
deep twice for the Scarlet Knights (5-16, 17-34-1).
No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 3, Cal State Fullerton
2
In Fullerton, Calif., Shane Bieber and Domenic
Mazza combined on a five-hitter as UC Santa Barbara won its Big
West series at Cal State Fullerton. Bieber (7-3) allowed five
hits and two runs in six innings with two walks and five
strikeouts to pick up the win. Mazza hurled three hitless frames
with two walks and four punchouts to record his second save.
Paddy O'Brien had a two-run single in the top of the first for
the Gauchos (12-6, 35-13). Jerrod Bravo had two hits and one RBI
for the Titans (13-5, 28-21).
No. 13 Miami 19, NYIT 1
In Coral Gables, Fla., Zack Collins and David
Thompson both homered and drove in four as Miami completed a
sweep of NYIT. Collins had a grand slam in the second, while
Thompson (2 for 3, 3 R) belted a three-run shot in the seventh.
Enrique Sosa (7-3, 6 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 6 K) picked up the win for
the Hurricanes (38-13). Josh Canabal went 1 for 4 with one RBI
for the Bears (14-30).
No. 14 Southern Cal 2, Stanford 0
In Los Angeles, Mitch Hart allowed five hits and
struck out six in a complete-game shutout as Southern Cal
claimed its series with Stanford. AJ Ramirez had an RBI double,
and Dante Flores drove in a run with a single in the eighth for
the Trojans (15-9, 34-16). Chris Castellanos allowed six hits
and one earned run in six innings for the Cardinal (7-17,
21-27).
No. 16 Missouri State 5, Southern Illinois 3
In Carbondale, Ill., Spencer Johnson went 2 for 4
with a pair of doubles, and Dylan Becker went 3 for 5 with the
game-winning RBI as Missouri State rallied to complete a sweep
of Southern Illinois. In winning their ninth straight games, the
Bears (15-3, 38-10) got 5.1 innings of relief from Sam Perez
(7-1), and Bryan Young finished with two innings for his 11th
save. Nick Hutchins had three hits for the Salukis (6-15,
11-41).
No. 18 Iowa 7, Minnesota 1
In Iowa City, Iowa, Calvin Matthews tossed five
innings, and Nick Hibbing threw the final four as the duo
combined to allow one earned run as Iowa completed a sweep of
Minnesota. Eric Toole and Jake Mangler each drove in two runs,
and Joel Booker went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI for the
Hawkeyes (18-3, 37-12). Matt Fiedler went 3 for 4 with an RBI
for the Gophers (7-14, 19-29).
No. 19 College of Charleston 11, UNCW 7
In Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Blake Butler went 3 for 5
with two homers, three runs and three RBI as College of
Charleston completed a three-game CAA sweep of UNCW. Butler had
a two-run homer to spark a six-run third as the Cougars (19-2,
38-10) erased an early 5-3 deficit. Nick Pappas (3 for 5, 2B)
drove in three, while Ryan Brown (2 for 3, 2 RBI) also went deep
for CofC. Steven Linkous and Andy Austin both had two hits and
two RBI for the Seahawks (15-6, 33-15).
