Compton fans career-high 11 as FSU downs Coastal

MSU nips LSU in 12, Gonzaga beats UCLA, Columbia wins Gehrig Division

 

No. 10 Florida State 8, Coastal Carolina 3

In Tallahassee, Fla., Mike Compton (right) struck out a career-high 11 as Florida State clinched a series win over Coastal Carolina. Compton (3-1) allowed five hits and one run in seven innings with no walks. The Seminoles (35-13) scored in four if their first five at-bats, including multiple runs in the third, fourth and fifth. Mississippi State 8, No. 1 LSU 7 (12)

In Starkville, Miss., Seth Heck had an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th as Mississippi State salvaged the finale of its SEC series with LSU. Jake Vickerson (3 for 6, 2 2B, 3 R) had a one-out double in the 12th and came home on the base hit by Heck. Chris Chinea (4 for 5, HR, 4 RBI) had a two-run single to cap a three-run ninth for the Tigers (16-7, 40-8) to force extra innings. Gavin Collins homered for the Bulldogs (8-16, 24-24).

 

Gonzaga 6, No. 2 UCLA 1

In Los Angeles, Taylor Jones and Justin Jacobs both drove in two in a five-run seventh as Gonzaga evened its series at UCLA. Jones had a two-run double and Jacobs (3 for 4, 3 RBI) knocked in a pair with a base hit. Brandon Bailey (7-2) tossed seven scoreless innings with seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts to record the victory for the Bulldogs (21-22). Darrell Miller Jr. had two hits and one RBI for the Bruins (32-11).

 

Columbia 4, Penn 2

In New York City, Logan Boyher homered in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie as Columbia defeated Penn to claim its third straight Gehrig Division crown. The Lions (27-14) will host Dartmouth in a best-of-three series on May 9-10 in the Ivy League Championship. Jordan Serena and David Vandercook also went deep for Columbia. George Thanopoulos (4-4, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, BB, 7 K) earned the victory, while Kevin Roy hurled two perfect innings to record his first save. Connor Betbeze and Austin Bossart both had one hit and one RBI for the Quakers (22-15).

 

Clemson 9, No. 3 Louisville 1

In Clemson, S.C., Matthew Crownover allowed one run in seven innings as Clemson took the ACC series opener from Louisville. Crownover (8-1) scattered five hits, walked three and struck out four. The Tigers (13-11, 24-21) scored three in the first, two in the third and four in the seventh. Weston Wilson had three hits and three RBI for Clemson. Sutton Whiting had two hits and a run for the Cardinals (19-3, 35-11).

 

No. 4 Texas A&M 6, Tennessee 1

In Knoxville, Tenn., Ryan Hendrix and Matt Kent combined on a five-hitter as Texas A&M clinched an SEC series win at Tennessee. Hendrix (4-1 6 IP, 4 H, R 2 BB 5 K) earned the victory, while Kent (3 IP, H, 6 K) recorded his first save. Mitchell Nau drove in three, while Blake Allemand had two hits and two runs for the Aggies (15-7, 40-7). Nick Senzel went 1 for 3 with two walks and a run for the Volunteers (7-16, 18-23).

 

No. 5 TCU 6, West Virginia 2

In Morgantown, W.Va., Preston Williams pitched eight solid innings as TCU clinched a Big 12 series victory over West Virginia. Williams (10-1) scattered five hits and allowed two runs with two walks and six strikeouts. Evan Skoug had an RBI single to spark a five-run third for the Horned Frogs (12-5, 36-9), and the final three in the frame scored on passed balls. Kyle Davis had two hits and one RBI for the Mountaineers (6-11, 24-21).

 

Kentucky 11, No. 6 Vanderbilt 5

In Lexington, Ky., Dorian Hairston went 2 for 5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI as Kentucky leveled its SEC series with Vanderbilt. The Wildcats (11-11, 26-19) erased a 2-1 deficit with four in the third and added six in the fifth. Connor Heady went 3 for 3 with two runs for UK. Dustin Beggs (7-2, 8.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, BB) struck out a career-high 12 in earning the victory. Dansby Swanson drove in two for the Commodores (16-7, 34-14).

 

California 5, No. 7 Arizona State 4

In Berkeley, Calif., Aaron Knapp had a run-scoring single with two away in the bottom of the ninth as Cal evened its Pac-12 series with Arizona State. Devin Pearson went 2 for 4 with a triple, a homer, two runs and two RBI for the Golden Bears (14-9, 28-15). Johnny Sewald went 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI for the Sun Devils (14-6, 29-14).

 

No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 4, UC Davis 1

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Justin Jacome allowed three hits and one unearned run in eight innings as UCSB clinched a Big West series win over UC Davis. Jacome (7-2) walked three and struck out seven. Domenic Mazza pitched a hitless ninth for his first save. Peter Maris (2 for 4) homered to snap a 1-1 tie and spark a three-run sixth for the Gauchos (10-4, 33-10-1). Nick Lynch (1 for 3, 2B) had a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the Aggies (5-9, 26-18-1).

 

No. 11 Florida 3, Georgia 2

In Athens, Ga., Richie Martin tripled and scored on a base hit by Jeremy Vasquez in the top of the ninth as Florida earned an SEC series win at Georgia. Bobby Poyner (4-1, 3 IP, 4 H, R, 3 K) earned the win after starter A.J. Puk allowed two hits in six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. Mitchell Webb went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI, while Stephen Wrenn homered for the Bulldogs (7-15, 22-24).

 

No. 12 Oklahoma State 8, Oklahoma 1

In Oklahoma City, Okla., Michael Freeman hurled a complete game with seven strikeouts as Oklahoma State secured a Big 12 series victory over Oklahoma. Freeman (8-2) allowed five hits, four walks and one run. Bryan Case (3 for 4, 2 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI) had a two-run triple and scored in the second for the Cowboys (14-6, 31-14). Corey Hassel had three hits and two RBI for OSU. Sheldon Neuse had two hits for the Sooners (10-7, 29-21).

 

No. 13 USC 8, Utah 5
In Sal Lake City, AJ Ramirez went 3 for 5 with a grand slam and five RBI as USC captured its series with Utah. Ramirez's first grand slam came in a five-run fourth inning, and the Trojans (13-7, 32-13) added three more runs in the sixth. David Oppenheim had two hits and two runs, and Bobby Stahel added three hits and a run. Cody Scaggari went 
2 for 5 with a run and three RBI for the Utes (6-14, 14-27).

No. 14 Miami 9-12, Pitt 5-0
In Pittsburgh, Andy Suarez allowed two hits and struck out four over seven scoreless innings, and Zack Collins went 2 for 4 with a grand slam, three runs and five RBI as Miami completed a doubleheader sweep of Pitt. The Hurricanes (13-8, 33-13) scored five times over the final two innings to overcome a 5-4 deficit to claim the first game. Brandon Lopez (2 RBI) had a game-tying, RBI single to tie the game in the eighth, and Miami sent nine batters to the plate in the ninth, with David Thompson giving it a 6-5 lead with an RBI single. George Iskenderian went 4 for 5 with two RBI for the Hurricanes. Alex Kowalczyk went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI in the first game for Pitt. Boo Vasquez went 2 for 3 for the Panthers in Game 2 for the Panthers (6-17, 16-28).

No. 15 Dallas Baptist 12, Charlotte 4
In Charlotte, Justin Wall went 3 for 5 with a homer - his second in two days - and five RBI as Dallas Baptist scored early and often in beating Charlotte for the second straight day. Tagg Duce went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI and the Patriots (35-9) got three hits and three runs from Daniel Sweet and two hits and four runs from Camden Duzenack, their first two batters. DBU scored five times in the first and two more in each of the second and third innings. Brad Elwood went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI for 49ers (17-23).

No. 16 Missouri State 9, Wichita State 1
In Springfield, Mo., Matt Hall struck out 15 in seven splendid innings as Missouri State beat Wichita State for the second straight day. Hall (7-2) allowed one run on two hits for the Bears (11-3, 33-10). Jake Burger led the offense by going 4 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI, and Justin Paulsen added two hits and two RBI. Gunnar Troutwine drove in the lone run for the Shockers (6-8, 18-28).

No. 17 FAU 18, UAB 4
In Birmingham, Ala., a day after being shut out, FAU exploded for 18 hits and rolled past UAB. CJ Chatham went 3 for 6 with a homer, two runs and four RBI, and Roman Collins added two hits, including a homer, and four RBI for the Owls (16-7, 34-11). Brendon Sanger also homered in a 2-for-3 day with two runs and two RBI, and Billy Endris went 3 for 5 with two triples, three runs and three RBI. Nathan Vincent went 3 for 4 with two runs for UAB (11-12, 24-20).

Michigan 11, No. 18 Iowa 5
In Ann Arbor, Mich., Carmen Benedetti went 4 for 5 with a run and five RBI, and Kendall Patrick went 3 for 3 with a homer, three runs and two RBI as Michigan scored six late runs to even its series with Iowa. Matt Ogden (4-1) tossed four hitless innings of relief with four strikeouts for the Wolverines (12-8, 28-18). Dan Potempa had two RBI for the Hawkeyes (14-3, 32-12).

No. 19 College of Charleston 3, William & Mary 1
In Williamsburg, Va., Brandon Glazer improved to 9-1 by tossing a career-best 8.1 innings as College of Charleston claimed its series with William & Mary. Glazer allowed one run on four hits and struck out three, and Chase Henry aided with a double-play grounder to end the game for his fifth save for the Cougars (15-2, 34-9). Ryan Brown went 2 for 5 with a run for Charleston. Nick Brown (5-2) allowed five hits and three earned runs for the Tribe (9-11, 19-24).
