Naile, Lowery combine for UAB shutout of FAU

Texas A&M tops Tennessee, TCU downs WVU, Vandy downs Kentucky

 

UAB 6, No. 17 Florida Atlantic 0

In Birmingham, Ala., James Naile and Thomas Lowery combined on a four-hit shutout as UAB blanked Florida Atlantic to kick off their Conference USA series. Naile (7-2) worked 7.2 innings with four hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Lowery fanned two of the final four hitters to preserve the victory. The Blazers (11-11, 24-19) expanded a 1-0 lead with five in the fifth. Jeff Schalk had two doubles and two RBI for UAB. CJ Chatham and Brendon Sanger both went 2 for 3 for the Owls (15-7, 33-11).

 

No. 4 Texas A&M 6, Tennessee 5

In Knoxville, Tenn., Blake Allemand had a leadoff double in the top of the ninth and scored on a base hit by Mitchell Nau as Texas A&M edged Tennessee to begin their SEC series. Nau went 3 for 3 with two walks, two runs and two RBI, while Allemand had two hits and two runs for the Aggies (14-7, 39-7). Andrew Lee homered and scored twice for the Volunteers (7-15, 18-22).

 

No. 5 TCU 9, West Virginia 4

In Morgantown, W.Va., Evan Skoug homered and drove in three, and Derek Odell homered and scored twice as TCU topped West Virginia in the Big 12 for coach Jim Schlossnagle his 500th win as Horned Frogs skipper. Tyler Alexander (4-2) allowed four runs and eight hits and struck out nine in 8.1 innings for the Horned Frogs (11-5, 35-9). Skoug’s three-run homer came as part of a five-run eighth inning with much of the damage coming with two outs. Trailing 9-1, the Mountaineers (6-10, 24-20) scored three times in the ninth inning. Jackson Cramer and Shaun Corso each had two hits and a run, and Taylor Munden hit his 11th homer for WVU.

 

No. 6 Vanderbilt 13, Kentucky 3

In Lexington, Ky., Rhett Wiseman homered twice and drove in four as Vanderbilt defeated Kentucky in the SEC series opener. The Commodores (16-6, 34-13) broke a 3-3 tie with five in the seventh and added five more in the eighth. Ro Coleman also knocked in four, while Will Toffey went 4 for 4 with four runs for Vandy. Ka'ai Tom had two hits and a run for the Wildcats (10-11, 25-19).

 

No. 1 LSU 11, Mississippi State 4

In Starkville, Miss., LSU scored four in the fourth and four in the ninth to clinch an SEC series win at Mississippi State. Alex Bregman (3 for 5, 2 2B) and Conner Hale (2 for 6) both drove in three for the Tigers (16-6, 40-7). Reid Humphreys had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs (7-16, 23-24).

 

No. 2 UCLA 3, Gonzaga 0

In Los Angeles, James Kaprielian tossed 7.2 scoreless innings as UCLA blanked Gonzaga to begin their weekend series. Kaprielian (8-4) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six. David Berg allowed one hit and struck out one in the ninth for his 10th save. Brett Stephens and Chris Keck both had three hits and an RBI for the Bruins (32-10). Sam Brown went 2 for 4 for the Bulldogs (20-22).

 

No. 7 Arizona State 5, California 3

In Berkeley, Calif., Trever Allen smacked a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie as Arizona State took the Pac-12 series opener at Cal. Allen finished with two hits and two runs, while Jake Peevyhouse also knocked in two for the Sun Devils (14-5, 29-13). Chris Paul (2 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) homered for the Bears (13-9, 27-15), who stranded 13.

 

No. 9 UCSB 3, UC Davis 2

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Dillon Tate turned in another terrific outing, and battery-mate Campbell Wear broke a 2-2 tie with a double off the left-field fence in the sixth inning as UCSB edged UC Davis in the Big West. Tate (7-3) allowed two earned runs on five hits and struck out seven in eight innings for the Gauchos (9-4, 32-10-1). Leadoff man Woody Woodward went 2 for 4 with two runs for UCSB. Tanner Bily had an RBI double in the fifth, and Nick Lynch added an RBI grounder as the Aggies (5-8, 26-17-1) claimed a 2-1 lead.

 

No. 10 Florida State 16, Coastal Carolina 2

In Tallahassee, Fla., DJ Stewart went 3 for 5 with a homer, three runs and five RBI as Florida State thumped Coastal Carolina to kick off their weekend series. The Seminoles (34-13) scored multiple runs in three different innings, including three in the first, four in the fourth and five in the eighth. John Sansone had two hits and three runs, while Ben DeLuzio knocked in three for FSU. Boomer Biegalski (4-3) allowed one hit and one run in seven innings with four walks and 12 strikeouts to earn the victory. G.K. Young went deep for the Chanticleers (31-14).

 

Georgia 11, No. 11 Florida 1

In Athens, Ga., Mike Bell went 4 for 4 with a triple, a homer and four RBI as Georgia took the SEC series opener from Florida. Jared Walsh also had four hits for the Bulldogs (7-14, 22-23). Josh Tobias had two hits for the Gators (13-9, 33-13).

 

No. 12 Oklahoma State 9, Oklahoma 6

In Tulsa, Okla., Ryan Sluder homered and drove in two as Oklahoma State took the Big 12 series opener from Oklahoma. The Sooners (10-6, 29-20) put up three in the bottom of the first before the Cowboys (13-6, 30-14) answered with two in the second, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth for an 8-3 advantage. Conor Costello went 1 for 3 with two walks and two runs for OSU. Jon Perrin (5-4, 7 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 5 K) picked up the win. Sheldon Neuse had two hits and three RBI for OU.

 

No. 13 USC 12, Utah 7

In Salt Lake City, Brent Wheatley hurled six innings of effective relief as USC outscored Utah in the Pac-12 series opener. Wheatley (3-2) allowed five hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts. The Trojans expanded a 6-5 lead with five in the top of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Timmy Robinson (1 for 4, 3 R) and a two-run single by Dante Flores. Jeremy Martinez had three hits and two RBI, while David Oppenheim went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI for USC. AJ Young drove in two, while Max Schuman and Kellen Marruffo both homered in the ninth for the Utes (6-12, 14-25).

 

No. 15 Dallas Baptist 6, Charlotte 3

In Charlotte, Justin Wall went 3 for 5 with a double, homer and four RBI as Dallas Baptist topped Charlotte. Joseph Shaw (8-2) tossed six innings with one earned run and four strikeouts for the Patriots (34-9). Wall’s two-run homer in the third gave DBU a 3-1 lead, and after the 49ers (17-22) cut the lead to one, Wall added an RBI single for a 4-2 lead. Brandon Koch picked up his 12th save for DBU, which limited damage even though Charlotte loaded the bases three times. Brett Netzer returned to the 49ers lineup for the first time in three weeks and went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

 

No. 16 Missouri State 8, Wichita State 3

In Springfield, Mo., Blake Graham had a two-run double to cap a three-run third as Missouri State took the MVC series opener from Wichita State. Graham finished with three RBI, while Spencer Johnson (2 for 3, HR) drove in two and Eric Cheray (2 for 4) scored twice for the Bears (10-3, 32-10). Jon Harris (5-1, 4 H, R, BB) fanned 11 in eight innings for MSU. Gunnar Troutwine had two hits and a run for the Shockers (6-7, 18-27).

 

No 18 Iowa 13, Michigan 7

In Ann Arbor, Mich., Dan Potempa went 4 for 6 with three RBI to lead Iowa past Michigan in the Big Ten series opener. The Hawkeyes (14-2, 32-11) scored multiple runs in three of the first four innings in building a 9-4 lead. Nick Roscetti had two hits and four RBI, while Tyler Peyton (3 for 5, 2B, 2 RBI), Kris Goodman (2 for 3) and Jake Mangler (1 for 4, 2B) each scored three for Iowa. Carmen Benedetti had two hits and three RBI for the Wolverines (11-8, 27-18).

 

No. 19 College of Charleston 15, William & Mary 2

In Williamsburg, Va., Alex Pastorius went 4 for 6 with two homers, four runs and four RBI to lead College of Charleston to a 15-2 win over William & Mary to begin their CAA set. Blake Butler (3 for 4, 2 R) went deep twice and knocked in four, while Carl Wise (3 for 6, 2 R) drove in three for the Cougars (14-2, 33-9). CofC scored multiple runs in four of the first six innings in building a 12-2 lead. Taylor Clarke (10-1, 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) earned the victory. Josh Smith went 2 for 3 with a run for the Tribe (9-10, 19-22).
