DeLuzio scores in 17th to lift Florida State over Miami

LSU rallies past Texas A&M, Vandy beats Missouri, Stanford stops UCLA

 

No. 12 Florida State 8, No. 13 Miami 7 (17)

In Coral Gables, Fla., Ben DeLuzio had a leadoff single and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 17th as Florida State outlasted Miami to begin their ACC series. The Seminoles (15-7, 32-12) led 4-1 after six before the Hurricanes (15-7, 30-12) tied it with three in the seventh. Both teams scored single runs in the 11th, 13th and 14th. John Delph went 5 for 7 with a run, while Quincy Nieporte was 3 for 5 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and two RBI for FSU. Will Zirzow (1-0, 3.2 IP, 2 H, BB) earned the victory. George Iskenderian went 1 for 4 with three walks and three runs for Miami.

 

No. 1 LSU 9, No. 2 Texas A&M 6

In Baton Rouge, La., Alex Bregman had a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh as LSU clinched an SEC series win over Texas A&M. The Tigers (14-5, 37-6) trailed 5-2 after six before Bregman (2 for 4) gave them the lead for good. Jake Fraley (3 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) had an RBI triple and scored in a three-run eighth for LSU. Russell Reynolds (4-0, 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) picked up the win, while Hunter Newman (2 IP, 4 H, R, K) notched his third save. Blake Allemand went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, while Nick Banks drove in a pair for the Aggies (12-7, 36-7).

 

No. 11 Vanderbilt 9, No. 18 Missouri 2

In Nashville, Tenn., Carson Fulmer struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings, and Vanderbilt erupted for eight runs in the first three innings in an SEC win over Missouri. Zander Wiel and Jeren Kendall each had two-run homers as the Commodores (13-6, 31-13) scored six times in the third and roughed up Missouri’s Reggie McClain. Fulmer (8-1) allowed three hits and walked four. Rhett Wiseman also homered, and Bryan Reynolds went 3 for 4 with two runs for Vandy. Zach Lavy went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Tigers (12-7, 26-16).

 

Stanford 6, No. 3 UCLA 1

In Stanford, Calif., Brett Hanewich tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as Stanford took the Pac-12 series opener from UCLA. Hanewich (3-3) walked three and allowed one earned run. Zach Hoffpauir (4 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) singled and scored in the fourth, had an RBI single in a four-run fifth and drove in another run with a base hit in the sixth for the Cardinal (5-11, 18-21). Jesse Kuet had three hits, while Drew Jackson went 2 for 4 with two runs for Stanford. Trent Chatterton had an RBI single in the second for the Bruins (14-5, 29-9).

 

No. 4 Louisville 10, Bethune-Cookman 4

In Louisville, Ky., Zach Lucas went 4 for 5 with three RBI, and Kyle Funkhouser allowed one earned run in a complete-game win as Louisville topped Bethune-Cookman. Bryant Munoz and Jordan Robinson had RBI singles in the second inning as the Wildcats (15-32) took a 4-0 lead after two innings. Nick Solak went 3 for 4 with two RBI and three runs, and Corey Ray homered and drove in two for the Cardinals (32-10).

 

Kentucky 3, No. 6 Florida 0

In Gainesville, Fla., Zack Brown tossed seven scoreless innings, an Dorian Hairston drove in two as Kentucky blanked Florida in the SEC. Brown (4-4) allowed five hits and struck out six, extending his scoreless-innings streak to 15.1 innings and lowering his ERA to 2.81. Logan Salow got a strikeout to end the game for his second save for the Wildcats (9-9, 24-16). Ryan Larson had two of the five hits for the Gators (12-7, 32-11).

 

No. 7 Arizona State 6, Tennessee Tech 3

In Phoenix, Ariz., Colby Woodmansee had RBI singles in the first, second and eighth to lead Arizona State past Tennessee Tech in their series lid-lifter. The Sun Devils (27-11) plated three in the first and two in the second to take control early. Seth Martinez (2-0, 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, BB, 6 K) picked up the win, while Eric Melbostad recorded the final out for his third save. Ryan Flick (2 for 4) doubled and scored in a three-run fifth for the Golden Eagles (19-20).

 

No. 8 USC 11, Oregon State 3

In Corvallis, Ore., Angelo La Bruna homered and drove in four as USC thumped Oregon State in the Pac-12 series opener. Timmy Robinson went 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBI, while Bobby Stahel and Garrett Stubbs both had two hits and two runs for the Trojans (11-5, 30-10). Tyler Gilbert (3-1, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB) struck out 10 in seven innings in recording the victory. Caleb Hamilton homered for the Beavers (8-8, 25-13).

 

No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 5, Hawaii 0

In Honolulu, Dillon Tate tossed seven hitless innings as UC Santa Barbara blanked Hawaii to kick off their Big West series. Tate (6-3) walked two and fanned six. Peter Maris went 3 for 5 with a double and a run, while Cameron Newell added three hits and one RBI for the Gauchos (7-3, 30-9). JJ Kitaoka had a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth for the Rainbows (5-8, 14-25) to break up the no-hitter.

 

No. 10 Illinois 10, Penn State 1

In State College, Pa., David Kerian had a grand slam, and Reid Roper also homered and finished with four RBI as Illinois extended its winning streak to 15 games by beating Penn State. Kevin Duchene (7-1) tossed six innings win one unearned run and five strikeouts for the Fighting Illini (11-1, 34-6-1), which is one win shy of the school-record winning streak (1959 and 1989). Greg Guers went 2 for 2 with an RBI for Penn State (2-10, 13-24).

 

Texas Tech 5, No. 14 Oklahoma State 3

In Lubbock, Texas, Ryan Moseley allowed one run over seven innings as Texas Tech nipped Oklahoma State to begin their Big 12 series. Moseley (4-4) gave up six hits and one walk while striking out seven. Dominic Moreno fanned three over 1.1 innings to earn his seventh save. Eric Gutierrez had two hits and two RBI for the Red Raiders (10-6, 27-15). Dustin Williams went 2 for 5 with a triple, one run and one RBI for the Cowboys (10-6, 27-14).

 

Old Dominion 15, No. 15 FAU 3

In Boca Raton, Fla., Josh Eldridge went 3 for 5 with a homer, three runs and five RBI, and Zach Rutherford added three hits, three runs and four RBI as Old Dominion bounced FAU in Conference USA. Sam Sinnen (4-2) tossed seven innings with three runs and three strikeouts for the Monarchs (7-12, 20-21), who scored seven times in the first two innings and added six in the eighth in the rout. Ryan Miller hit a solo homer for the Owls (13-6, 31-10).

 

No. 16 Dallas Baptist 6, Southern Illinois 3

In Carbondale, Ill., Daniel Sweet had a two-run single, and Nash Knight added a two-run double as Dallas Baptist scored five times in the sixth inning in an MVC win over Southern Illinois. Joseph Shaw kept the Salukis (5-8, 10-33) off the board until allowing three runs in the eighth, and Drew Smith posted his second save for the Patriots (11-5, 30-9).

 

No. 17 Missouri State 8, Illinois State 3 (10)

In Normal, Ill., Jake Burger had a three-run triple to spark a five-run 10th inning as Missouri State got past Illinois State in the MVC. Dylan Becker and Spencer Johnson each had two hits and two RBI for the Bears (8-2, 29-9). Tate Matheny added two hits and three runs as Bryan Young improved to 5-0 with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. Mason Snyder had two hits and two RBI for the Redbirds (5-8, 20-19).

 

No. 19 Maryland 12-7, Purdue 3-3

In West Lafayette, Ind., sophomore Mike Shawaryn tossed seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts to become the school’s all-time leader in wins (21), and Kevin Martir went 3 for 4 with a double, homer, three runs and three RBI as Maryland beat Purdue in the first game of a Big Ten doubleheader. Kevin Smith went 2 for 4 with a homer, three runs and two RBI for the Terps (10-4, 29-13). In the second game, Rob Galligan struck out 10 and allowed two earned runs as Maryland completed the sweep. Martir added three hits and two RBI to lead the Terps. Kyle Johnson had a two-run homer for the Boilermakers (1-13, 13-30).

 

Radford 7-6, High Point 6-5

In Radford, Va., Shane Johnsonbaugh’s first career homer came in the bottom of the ninth in game-winning fashion as Radford took a pair of Big South games from High Point (9-8, 21-20). In the first game, the Highlanders (14-3, 28-13) scored four times in the eighth inning to rally from a 6-3 deficit. Josh Gardiner had a two-run single, and Hunter Higgerson plated the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly.

 

Elon 14, UNC Wilmington 3

In Elon, N.C., Casey Jones had four hits and three RBI, and James Venuto homered and drove in two as Elon roughed up UNC Wilmington in the CAA. Nick Beaulac allowed three runs and struck out eight in seven innings for the Phoenix (10-6, 21-19). Terence Connelly had two hits and two RBI for the Seahawks (11-2, 28-10).
