Zardon delivers
game-winner as LSU edges Texas A&M
Auburn tops Georgia, BYU pounds USF, NYIT
downs Iona
No. 1 LSU 4, No. 2 Texas A&M 3
In Baton Rouge, La., Danny Zardon delivered an
RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as LSU nipped Texas A&M in
the SEC series opener. Jared Foster had a one-out single in the
ninth for the Tigers (13-5, 36-6), moved to second on a wild
pitch and scored on the base hit by Zardon. The Aggies (12-6,
36-6) had tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth as J.B.
Moss (2 for 4, 2 R) led off with a triple and came home on a
base hit by Logan Nottebrok. Blake Allemand went 3 for 4 with a
double and a run for Texas A&M. The Aggies scored single runs in
the first two innings before LSU tallied two in the fourth and
one in the seventh. Collin Strall (3-0) fanned the final batter
in the top of the ninth to pick up the win. Jared Poche' (7 IP,
6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 K) delivered a solid start for the Tigers.
Auburn 4, Georgia 2
In Auburn, Ala., Anfernee Grier had an RBI single
and scored in a three-run first as Auburn defeated Georgia to
kick off their SEC series. Blake Logan went 2 for 4 with a
double and an RBI for the Tigers (8-11, 27-16). Cole Lipscomb
(6-1, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, BB, 2 K) earned the victory, while Trey
Wingenter (2 IP, 2 H, BB, K) recorded his second save. Stephen
Wrenn went 3 for 4 for the Bulldogs (6-12, 21-21).
BYU 14, San Francisco 4
In Provo, Utah, Colton Shaver homered and knocked
in five, while Brennon Lund went deep, scored three and drove in
four as BYU thumped San Francisco in the WCC series opener. Lund
homered in a two-run first, while Shaver belted a two-run dinger
to cap a seven-run second for the Cougars (9-7, 19-19). Kolton
Mahoney (4-4, 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 K) picked up the win for
BYU. Connor Hofmann had a two-run single in the fourth for the
Dons (14-5, 22-21).
NYIT 5, Iona 1
In Old Westbury, N.Y., Louis Mele homered and
drove in three as NYIT downed Iona. Mele delivered a two-run
dinger in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third. Chris
Johnson (2-1, 7.1 IP, 4 H, 1 UE, 3 BB, 4 K) earned the victory.
Joe Daru had two doubles and two runs for the Bears (10-20).
Seth Hoagland and Jon Budesa both had a hit and a walk for the
Gaels (12-26).
