Ray steals home as Louisville sweeps Wake Forest

South Carolina downs Vandy, Virginia tops Miami, Cal Poly nips UCSB

 

No. 4 Louisville 10-6, Wake Forest 1-5

In Louisville, Ky., Corey Ray stole home for the game-winning run as Louisville completed a doubleheader and weekend sweep of Wake Forest. The Cardinals (19-2, 30-9) trailed 5-4 entering the ninth and scored on a wild pitch and Ray’s steal of home – the 17th on the weekend for Louisville. Nate Mondou went 3 for 3 with two RBI for the Demon Deacons (9-12, 22-19). In the first game, Nick Solak had three hits, two stolen bases, two RBI and a run in support of Brendan McKay (6-1), who allowed one unearned run in six innings.

 

South Carolina 3, No. 5 Vanderbilt 2

In Columbia, S.C., Max Schrock had a RBI triple to spark a three-run sixth inning as South Carolina captured its SEC series with Vanderbilt. After struggling on the mound in their previous four SEC games, the Gamecocks (8-10, 25-16) were tremendous in the final two games, with Cody Mincey (2-2) working three scorless innings of relief and Taylor Widener picking up his ninth save with 2.2 scoreless innings. Alex Destino and Logan Koch added RBI singles in the big sixth inning for South Carolina. Jeren Kendall went 2 for 4 with a solo homer and two runs for the Commodores (12-6, 29-12).

 

Virginia 5, No. 9 Miami 2

In Charlottesville, Va., Adam Haseley had a two-run single to highlight a four-run eighth as Virginia clinched an ACC series win over Miami. Robbie Coman and Charlie Cody both had three hits and a run for the Cavaliers (9-11, 24-14). Kevin Doherty (2-1, 0.1 IP, H) earned a win in relief of Connor Jones (7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K). Josh Sborz fanned one in a hitless ninth for his 11th save. Willie Abreu went 4 for 4 with one run and one RBI for the Hurricanes (14-6, 29-11).

 

Cal Poly 4, No. 10 UC Santa Barbara 3

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Brian Mundell went 3 for 4 with a double, a walk, a run and an RBI as Cal Poly evened its Big West series with UC Santa Barbara. Mark Mathias and Peter Van Gansen also had three hits for the Mustangs (5-3, 16-19). Kyle Smith (4-5, 8.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Taylor Chris struck out the final hitter for his first save. Woody Woodward scored twice for the Gauchos (5-3, 27-9).

 

No. 1 Texas A&M 13, Arkansas 6

In College Station, Texas, Logan Taylor went 3 for 5 with a double, homer, two runs and five RBI as Texas A&M topped Arkansas in SEC play. The second game of their doubleheader was suspended by rain in the sixth inning, with A&M leading 8-3. Hunter Melton added three hits and two RBI for the Aggies (12-3, 35-3), who scored six runs in the fifth inning to take control. Michael Bernal launched a grand slam as the Razorbacks (7-9, 22-17) scored six of their own in the sixth.

 

No. 2 LSU 4-9, Georgia 1-1

In Athens, Ga., Alex Lange and Jared Poche’ sparkled as LSU swept an SEC doubleheader from Georgia. In the first game, Lange allowed one earned run over six innings, and Hunter Newman (7-0) contributed three hitless innings of relief for his second save. Kade Scivicque led the offense with two hits and two RBI for the Tigers (12-5, 34-6). Nick King went 2 for 3 with a solo homer for the Bulldogs (6-11, 20-20). In the second game, Poche’ (7-1) yielded four hits and one earned run and struck out five. Scivicque again had a big game, going 3 for 3 with two runs and a solo homer. Andrew Stevenson added three hits and two runs. Zach Bowers had a solo homer for Georgia.

 

No. 3 UCLA 2, Cal 1

In Los Angeles, Ty Moore and Chris Keck had RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth as UCLA rallied to edge Cal to clinch their Pac-12 series. David Berg (4-0) tossed the final two innings for the Bruins (14-4, 28-8), who are off to their best conference start since 1969. Lucas Erceg went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Golden Bears (10-8, 23-13).

 

No. 6 Arizona State 4, Washington 3

In Seattle, Andrew Snow had an RBI single in the top of the seventh to snap a 3-3 tie as Arizona State evened its Pac-12 series with Washington. Snow had two hits and two RBI, while Colby Woodmansee homered for the Sun Devils (12-5, 24-11). Ryan Kellogg (7-1, 8 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) earned the win, while Ryan Burr allowed one hit and struck out three for his 11th save. Josh Cushing drove in a pair for the Huskies (7-10, 21-15). Tyler Davis (5-4, 9 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB) struck out 11 for Washington.

 

No. 7 TCU 1, Santa Clara 0

In Fort Worth, Texas, Preston Morrison tossed six shutout innings with six strikeouts as TCU blanked Santa Clara. Morrison (8-1) allowed four hits and did not walk a batter. Trey Teakell fanned three in two scoreless innings before Riley Ferrell walked two and fanned a pair in the ninth for his 10th save. Dane Steinhagen had an RBI single in the fourth for the Horned Frogs (28-8). Joe Becht had two hits for the Broncos (16-20). The second game was suspended in the top of the ninth with TCU holding a 6-1 advantage.

 

No. 8 Florida 2, Mississippi State 1

In Starkville, Miss., Peter Alonso went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI as Florida clinched an SEC series win at Mississippi State. Alonso had an RBI single in the fourth and had a leadoff single and scored the tie-breaking run in the seventh. Aaron Rhodes (1-0, 1 IP, BB, K) picked up the win in relief, while Bobby Poyner (2.2 IP, H) earned his third save for the Gators (11-6, 30-10). Wes Rea went 1 for 1 with two walks and one RBI for the Bulldogs (6-11, 22-18).
