Wynkoop fans 12 as South Carolina tops Vanderbilt

Washington edges Arizona State, UCLA downs Cal, Louisville nips WFU

 

South Carolina 5, No. 5 Vanderbilt 2

In Columbia, S.C., Jack Wynkoop hurled a complete game with 12 strikeouts as South Carolina evened its SEC series with Vanderbilt. Wynkoop (5-4) scattered 10 hits and walked one. DC Arendas had a two-run homer in the third and Max Schrock drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Gamecocks (7-10, 24-16) the lead for good. Rhett Wiseman had a two-run single in the top of the seventh for the Commodores (12-5, 29-11).

 

Washington 9, No. 6 Arizona State 7

In Seattle, Braden Bishop had a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh and capped a three-run eighth with an RBI single as Washington outscored Arizona State in the Pac-12 series opener. Branden Berry (2 for 4) and Will Sparks both had two-run homers for the Huskies (7-9, 21-14). Johnny Sewald had a three-run homer in the fourth for the Sun Devils (11-5, 23-11).

 

No. 3 UCLA 7, California 1

In Los Angeles, Luke Persico went 3 for 4 with one run and two RBI as UCLA evened its Pac-12 series with California. Darrell Miller, Jr. (2 for 4) had a two-run single in a four-run first for the Bruins (13-4, 27-8). Grant  Watson (6-3, 6.1 IP, 3 H, R, 4 K) earned the victory. Mitchell Kranson went 1 for 4 with a double and a run for the Golden Bears (10-7, 23-12).

 

No. 4 Louisville 6, Wake Forest 5

In Louisville, Ky., Corey Ray homered twice and drove in three runs, and Mike White singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Louisville edged Wake Forest in the ACC. Each team scored five runs in the first three innings then put up zeroes until the bottom of the ninth, when Brendan McKay singled and pinch-runner Colin Lyman moved to second on a sacrifice by Zach Lucas. White, who drove in two and stole two bases, singled to left-center to score Lyman for the Cardinals (17-2, 28-9). Joey Rodriguez led the Demon Deacons (9-10, 22-17) with two RBI.

 

No. 8 Florida 6, Mississippi State 3

In Starkville, Miss., Josh Tobias had a three-run triple and scored in the top of the first as Florida took the SEC series opener at Mississippi State. Tobias added an RBI double in the fifth, while Dalton Guthrie went 3 for 4 with two runs for the Gators (10-6, 29-10). Logan Shore (6-2, 9 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 6 K) hurled the complete-game victory. John Holland had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs (6-10, 22-17).

 

Virginia 5, No. 9 Miami 4

In Charlottesville, Va., Joe McCarthy went 3 for 4 with two runs, and Robbie Coman added two hits and two RBI as Virginia slipped past Miami in ACC play, ending the Hurricanes’ nine-game winning streak. Cavaliers ace Nathan Kirby left with a strained left lat muscle after three innings according to a school release, and David Rosenberger (1-0) tossed 2.2 innings of relief and allowed one run to earn the win for the Cavaliers (8-11, 23-14). Josh Sborz worked the final 2.1 innings for his 10th save. Christopher Barr went 2 for 3 with a double, triple, two runs and an RBI for the Hurricanes (14-5, 29-10).

 

No. 10 UCSB 8, Cal Poly 7

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Luke Swenson went 4 for 4 with three runs, and Robby Nesovic added three hits and three RBI as UCSB rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome Cal Poly in the Big West. Billy Frederick had a two-run, bloop single, in the five-run frame as the Gauchos (5-2, 27-8) won their 14th in 15 games. Peter Van Gansen hit a three-run homer, and John Schuknecht blasted a two-run shot as the Mustangs (4-3) took a 6-2 lead with six runs in the second inning.

 

No. 11 USC 13, Oregon 5

In Los Angeles, Timmy Robinson homered and drove in five as USC won the Pac-12 series lid-lifter with Oregon. Blake Lacey had two hits and three RBI for the Trojans (9-4, 28-9), who erased a 4-3 deficit with five in the fourth and added five more in the seventh. Matt Eureste had two doubles, a run and an RBI for the Ducks (4-9, 22-17).

 

No. 12 Florida State 15, Pitt 2

In Tallahassee, Fla., Chris Marconcini went 3 for 5 with two homers, three runs and six RBI, and DJ Stewart added a 3-for-3 night with a homer and five RBI as Florida State scored eight times in the sixth to pull from a close game in an ACC win over Pitt. Leading 3-2, the Seminoles (12-7, 28-12) exploded in the sixth, with Stewart’s grand slam the big blow. Marconcini hit a grand slam of his own in the eighth inning for FSU, which got six solid innings from Boomer Biegalski (3-3, 2 H, 2 ER, 8 K). Charles LeBlanc hit a solo homer in the first for the Panthers (6-13, 14-22).

 

No. 13 Illinois 5, Indiana 1

In Champaign, Ill., Adam Walton and Jason Goldstein both had two hits, including a homer, as Illinois took the Big Ten series opener from Indiana. Kevin Duchene (6-1, 7 IP, 10 H, R, BB) fanned nine in picking up the win for the Illini (9-1, 31-6-1). Casey Rodrigue went 3 for 3 with a run for the Hoosiers (5-7, 21-14).

 

No. 15 Missouri 4, Alabama 3

In Columbia, Mo., Reggie McClain tossed 8.2 innings with one earned run and got a little help from Breckin Williams, who got the final out with two runners on base for his ninth save as Missouri nipped Alabama in SEC action. McClain (5-4) allowed eight hits and struck out five, getting support from Jake Ivory (2 for 2, run) and Josh Lester (2 for 3, run). J.C. Wilhite went 3 for 4 with a run, and Chandler Avant had two hits and two runs for the Crimson Tide (6-10, 19-17).

 

Tulane 3, No. 16 UCF 0

In New Orleans, Corey Merrill and two relievers combined on the shutout as Tulane blanked UCF to kick off their American series. Merrill (2-3) allowed five hits and six walks in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts in picking up the win. Patrick Duester gave up two hits and fanned three in 2.2 innings before Ian Gibaut recorded the final two outs to earn his second save. Stephen Alemais went 1 for 3 with two runs for the Green Wave (4-6, 23-14). Jordan Savinon went 2 for 3 with a walk for the Knights (4-6, 25-14), who stranded 13.

 

No. 17 FAU 8-1, Southern Miss 4-6

In Hattiesburg, Miss., Christian Dicks had a two-run double to spur a four-run sixth inning and added two runs as FAU topped Southern Miss in the first game of a Conference USA doubleheader. In the second game, Kirk McCarty allowed five hits and one unearned run in seven terrific innings as the Golden Eagles took the nightcap. Chase Scott had two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Southern Miss used a four-run sixth inning of its own to pull away. In the first game, Esteban Puerta and CJ Chatham each had two hits, and Reily Monkman closed with three scoreless innings for his first save for the Owls (12-5, 30-9). Scott Chase had two RBI for the Golden Eagles (9-7, 20-13).

 

No. 19 Iowa 4, Northwestern 3

In Iowa City, Iowa, Jake Mangler had an RBI single to cap a three-run bottom of the ninth as Iowa edged Northwestern to begin their Big Ten series. Kris Goodman also had an RBI base hit and Eric Toole added a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the Hawkeyes (9-1, 25-10). Ryan Erickson (3-0, 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 K) earned the victory. Joe Hoscheit went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI for the Wildcats (3-7, 10-25).

 

Radford 4, No. 20 Coastal Carolina 3

In Conway, S.C., H Higgerson had a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth as Radford nipped Coastal Carolina to start their Big South series. Patrick Marshall went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for the first-place Highlanders (11-2, 24-12). Daniel Bridgeman (4-2, 2 IP, H, BB, K) earned the victory, while Ryan Meisinger fanned one in a hitless ninth to record his ninth save. Zach Remillard went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Chanticleers (10-3, 26-11).
