Nieporte homers in 12th as Florida State nips Florida

OSU shuts out Louisville, Belmont edges Vandy, UCLA beats Fullerton

 

Florida State 4, No. 8 Florida 3 (12)

In Tallahassee, Fla., Quincy Nieporte belted a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 12th to carry Florida State past Florida. Chris Marconcini (2 for 5) went deep in the eighth to create the 3-3 deadlock. Dylan Busby homered in the second and the fourth for the first two runs for the Seminoles (27-12). Billy Strode (2-0, 4 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 3 K) earned the victory. Harrison Bader (3 for 5, 2B, R, RBI) and JJ Schwarz (2 for 4, 2B, HR) led the offense for the Gators (28-10).

 

Ohio State 2, No. 4 Louisville 0

In Columbus, Ohio, Adam Niemeyer and four relievers combined on the shutout as Ohio State blanked Louisville. Niemeyer (1-0) allowed two hits in five innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Trace Dempsey fanned two in the ninth in earning his fifth save. The Buckeyes (24-9) scored both their runs in the third. Tre' Gantt (2 for 3) had a leadoff single and moved to third on a base hit by L Grant Davis (3 for 3). Troy Montgomery (2 for 4) had a single to plate Gantt with the first run. Davis scored on an error later in the frame to make it 2-0. Brendan McKay had three hits for the Cardinals (27-9).

 

Belmont 3, No. 5 Vanderbilt 2

In Nashville, Tenn., Matt Beaty homered in the top of the eighth to snap a 2-2 tie as Belmont upset Vanderbilt. Tyler Walsh went deep in the sixth for the Bruins (19-15) to knot the score at 2-2. Patrick McGrath (4-2, 7 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) earned the victory, while Matthew Kinney fanned four over two hitless frames to record his second save. Dansby Swanson went 2 for 4 with a double, a triple and an RBI for the Commodores (28-10).

 

No. 3 UCLA 7, Cal State Fullerton 2

In Los Angeles, Brett Urabe went 2 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI to lead UCLA past Cal State Fullerton. The Bruins (26-7) scored two in the second and two more in the third to take control. Cody Poteet (3-1) pitched three hitless innings with three strikeouts and combined with five relievers on the three-hitter. Jerrod Bravo had a pinch-hit two-run single in the sixth for the Titans (19-16).

 

No. 7 TCU 7, UT Arlington 1

In Arlington, Texas, Tyler Alexander fanned nine in seven innings as TCU won at UT Arlington. Alexander (3-2) allowed three hits, two walks and one unearned run. Elliott Barzilli had a two-run homer and Connor Wanhanen (2 for 4, 2 R) added a two-run double in the second for the Horned Frogs (27-8). Matt McLean had two hits and a walk for the Mavericks (15-20).

 

No. 11 USC 2, Pepperdine 0 (12)

In Malibu, Calif., Timmy Robinson had a two-run single with two away in the top of the 12th as USC outlasted Pepperdine. Marc Huberman (6-1, 3 H, BB, 5 K) earned the victory for the Trojans (27-9) and combined with three other hurlers for the shutout. Aaron Barnett went 3 for 4 for the Waves (20-18).

 

No. 13 Illinois 7, Illinois State 3

In Normal, Ill., Will Krug had a pinch-hit two-run single to highlight a four-run eighth as Illinois came from behind to win at Illinois State. The Illini (30-6-1) trailed 1-0 after six before taking the lead with two in the top of the seventh. Paul DeJong had a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh as the Redbirds (17-16) reclaimed the advantage. Illinois took the lead for good with four in the eighth and added one in the ninth. Ryne Roper had three hits and one RBI for the Illini. Andrew Mamlic (2-0, 0.2 IP) earned the win, while Nick Blackburn (2 IP, 2 H, K) notched his first save. Joe Kelch had three hits for Illinois State.

 

UALR 4, No. 15 Missouri 3

In Columbia, Mo., Kyle Kirk had an RBI single in the top of the ninth as UALR rallied past Missouri. The Trojans (14-19) scored single runs in each of the final three innings to snag the victory. Kirk finished with two hits and two RBI. Reed Willenborg (1-2, 8 IP, 5 H, 3 UE, 2 BB, 7 K) earned the victory, while Cameron Allen worked around a pair of hits in the ninth to record his fifth save. Jake Ring went 2 for 4 with a double and a run for the Tigers (24-13).
