Upset Saturday: Five of top six in CBI Poll fall

Ole Miss nips Vandy, MSU edges Texas A&M, Auburn wins at LSU

 

Ole Miss 5, No. 1 Vanderbilt 4

In Nashville, Tenn., Errol Robinson delivered a two-run single in the seventh to erase a 4-3 deficit and help Ole Miss win its SEC series at Vanderbilt. Will Stokes (6.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, BB, 4 K) was the starter and winner for the Rebels (7-5, 18-18). Sam Smith tossed two hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout before Jacob Waguespack gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth with one strikeout to record his first save. Dansby Swanson homered for the Commodores (11-4, 28-9).

 

Mississippi State 3, No. 2 Texas A&M 2

In College Station, Texas, Preston Brown allowed one run over seven innings as Mississippi State evened its SEC series at Texas A&M. Brown (5-3) scattered eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Trevor Fitts fanned four of the final six hitters to record his sixth save. Cody Brown homered for the Bulldogs (6-8, 22-15). Logan Taylor went deep for the Aggies (10-3, 32-3).

 

Auburn 6, No. 3 LSU 1

In Baton Rouge, La., Keegan Thompson tossed a six-hitter as Auburn leveled its SEC series at LSU. Thompson (7-2) walked one and struck out three. Anfernee Grier had three hits and three RBI for the visiting Tigers (5-9, 21-14). He was a home run short of the cycle. Cody Nulph knocked in a pair for Auburn. Andrew Stevenson went deep in the eighth for the lone run for LSU (9-5, 30-6).

 

No. 4 TCU 9, Kansas State 0

In Manhattan, Kan., Preston Morrison hurled a four-hit shutout as TCU evened its Big 12 series at Kansas State. Morrison (7-1) walked two and struck out six. The Horned Frogs (7-4, 26-7) scored one in the first and two in the sixth before putting the game away with six in the eighth. Derek Odell had two hits and three RBI, while Cody Jones went 3 for 5 with two runs for TCU. Max Brown had a pair of hits for the Wildcats (3-8, 15-18).

 

No. 7 USC 5, No. 5 UCLA 0

In Los Angeles, Kyle Twomey and Tyler Gilbert combined on the shutout as USC evened its Pac-12 series with UCLA. Twomey (6-1) allowed seven hits and three walks in seven innings with seven strikeouts, while Gilbert worked the final two frames with two hits, one walk and two punchouts. The Trojans (8-3, 26-8) tallied two in each of the first two frames. Dante Flores (2 for 4) had a two-run double in the first and Bobby Stahel (2 for 5, 3 RBI) added a two-run dinger in the second for USC. Chris Keck went 2 for 4 with a double for the Bruins (11-3, 24-7), who stranded 12.

 

Duke 2, No. 6 Louisville 1

In Durham, N.C., A Istler fanned 10 over seven innings as Duke leveled its ACC series with Louisville. Istler (3-2) allowed six hits, one walk and one run. K Koplove gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth, but struck out three to secure his seventh save. P Zyla had a two-out single and scored in sixth for the Blue Devils (5-12, 22-14) to snap a 1-1 deadlock. Brendan McKay had two hits for the Cardinals (5-2, 26-8) and was the tough-luck loser (5-1, 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K).

 

No. 8 Arizona State 5, Arizona 4

In Phoenix, Jake Peevyhouse delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as Arizona State won the Pac-12 series opener against Arizona. Peevyhouse finished with three hits, including a home run, and three RBI for the Sun Devils (10-3, 22-9). Michael Hoard had a two-run double in a three-run fourth for the Wildcats (7-6, 22-10).

 

Notre Dame 4, No. 9 Florida State 1

In Notre Dame, Ind., Brandon Bielak and Sean Guenther combined to hold Florida State to four hits and one run as Notre Dame clinched an ACC series victory. Bielak (4-1) allowed four hits and one run in 7.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts to earn the win. Guenther retired the final five hitters with two punchouts to record his third save. Ryan Lidge went 3 for 4, including a two-run double in the seventh for the Irish (8-9, 23-10). DJ Stewart and Chris Marconcini both doubled for the Seminoles (11-6, 26-11).

 

No. 10 Florida 12, South Carolina 5

In Gainesville, Fla., Richie Martin had three hits and drove in six as Florida scored in double figures for the second straight day against South Carolina. Martin had a two-run single to cap a four-run second, belted a three-run homer in the fourth and added an RBI double in the sixth for the Gators (8-6, 27-9). Kyle Martin went 4 for 4 and hit for the cycle for the Gamecocks (6-8, 23-13). He smacked a two-run homer in the first, doubled in the third, singled in the fifth, walked in the seventh and tripled in the ninth.
