Moore goes deep in the first as UCLA wins at USC

Ole Miss edges Vandy in 16, UAB blanks Rice, Kansas State thumps TCU

 

No. 5 UCLA 9, No. 7 USC 3

In Los Angeles, Ty Moore belted a three-run homer in the top of the first as UCLA downed USC in the Pac-12 series opener at the Trojans' Dedeaux Field. Christoph Bono (2 for 3, 4 RBI) also had a three-run dinger in the seventh for the Bruins (7-3, 25-8). James Kaprielian (7-2, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 6 K) earned the victory. Bobby Stahel (1 for 4, 2 R) went deep for the Trojans (7-3, 25-8).

 

Ole Miss 6, No. 1 Vanderbilt 5 (16)

In Nashville, Tenn., Henri Lartigue had an RBI double with two away in the top of the 16th as Ole Miss outlasted Vanderbilt to even the SEC series. The Rebels (6-8, 17-18) trailed 5-1 after eight before Colby Bortles belted a grand slam in the ninth to force extra innings. Scott Weathersby (1-1, 2 H, BB) fanned 10 over six innings to earn the victory. Walker Buehler struck out 13 in eight innings for the Commodores (11-3, 28-8). Will Toffey homered and knocked in two for Vandy.

 

UAB 4, No. 14 Rice 0

In Birmingham, Ala., James Naile hurled seven hitless innings as UAB blanked Rice to begin their Conference USA series. Naile (5-2) walked three and struck out eight. Hunter Kopycinski had a two-out single in the eighth for the lone hit for the Owls (11-5, 22-14). Griffin Gum had two hits and two runs for the Blazers (7-6, 20-12), who scored one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the eighth.

 

Kansas State 14, No. 4 TCU 4

In Manhattan, Kan., Clayton Dalrymple had a two-run single to highlight a seven-run first as Kansas State thumped TCU to start their Big 12 series. Dalrymple had two hits and two runs, while Max Brown had two hits and knocked in four for the Wildcats (3-7, 15-17). Colton Kalmus (1-2, 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) earned the victory. Connor Wanhanen had two hits and drove in one for the Horned Frogs (6-4, 25-7).

 

Notre Dame 5, No. 9 Florida State 2

In Notre Dame, Ind., Ryan Smoyer and Sean Guenther combined on a five-hitter as Notre Dame downed Florida State to kick off their ACC series. Smoyer (5-0) allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts to register the win. Guenther tossed two hitless innings with one walk and five punchouts to record his second save. Cavan Biggio had a two-run homer in the third for the Irish (7-9, 22-10). Dylan Busby belted a two-run dinger in the second for the Seminoles (11-5, 26-10).

 

No. 2 Texas A&M 3, Mississippi State 1

In College Station, Texas, Grayson Long allowed one unearned run over seven innings as Texas A&M topped Mississippi State to kick off their SEC series. Long (7-0) surrendered three hits and two walks while striking out four. Mark Ecker worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth to record his sixth save. Logan Taylor (2 for 4) had a two-run homer in the fourth to lead the offense for the Aggies (10-2, 32-2). Cody Brown and Reid Humphreys both had two hits for the Bulldogs (5-8, 21-15).

 

No. 3 LSU 3, Auburn 2

In Baton Rouge, La., Jared Poche and Hunter Newman combined to hold Auburn to a pair of runs as LSU won the SEC series opener. Poche (6-1) allowed eight hits, one walk and two first-innings runs while fanning five. Hunter Newman worked 3.1 hitless innings with one walk and five punchouts to record his first save. Blake Logan had an RBI double and scored in the top of the first for the visiting Tigers (4-9, 20-14). LSU (9-4, 30-5) answered with two in the first and one in the third. Mark Laird went 3 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI for the victors. Anfernee Grier doubled twice and scored for Auburn.

 

No. 6 Louisville 1, Duke 0

In Durham, N.C., Kyle Funkhouser fanned eight in seven scoreless innings as Louisville nipped Duke in the ACC series lid-lifter. Funkhouser (5-2) allowed four hits and one walk. Zack Burdi worked a hitless ninth for his fourth save. Brendan McKay drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and scored on a pinch-hit single by Blake Tiberi to give the Cardinals (15-1, 26-7) the game's lone run. Andy Perez had a triple for the Blue Devils (4-12, 21-14).

 

No. 11 Miami 11, Virginia Tech 1

In Coral Gables, Fla., Garrett Kennedy went 3 for 4 with a homer, four runs and two RBI to lead Miami past Virginia Tech in the ACC series opener. The Hurricanes (12-4) scored four in the first, two in the fourth and four more in the sixth to take control. Brandon Lopez had two hits and drove in three, while Christopher Barr went 2 for 5 with two RBI for Miami. Thomas Woodrey (4-1, 6 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 7 K) earned the win. Sam Fragale had two hits for the Hokies (7-9, 17-18).

 

No. 12 UC Santa Barbara 7, Cal State Northridge 4

In Northridge, Calif., Luke Swenson had an RBI single and scored in a six-run first as UC Santa Barbara won at Cal State Northridge in their Big West series opener. Dalton Kelly, Peter Maris and Clay Fisher also had run-scoring hits in the first for the Gauchos (3-1, 25-7). Nolan Bumstead doubled and drove in two for the Matadors (1-6, 20-12).

 

No. 13 Oklahoma State 7, Kansas 2

In Lawrence, Kan., Tim Arakawa had a two-run single to highlight a four-run seventh as Oklahoma State scored late to knock off Kansas to start their Big 12 series. Bryan Case added a three-run double in the ninth for insurance for the Cowboys (8-2, 24-9). Jon Perrin (3-3, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, BB, 6 K) picked up the win, while Trey Cobb (2.2 IP, BB, 2 K) notched his second save. Blair Beck (2 for 4) homered for the Jayhawks (1-6, 13-21).

 

Connecticut 6, No. 15 UCF 4

In Orlando, Fla., Carson Cross allowed one run over seven innings as Connecticut defeated UCF to kick off their American series. Cross (7-1) scattered eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Patrick Ruotolo (1.1 IP, H, 3 BB, 4 K) picked up his fourth save. Bryan Daniello had a two-run triple in a three-run first for the Huskies (4-3, 21-12). Jon Testani added a two-run single in the eighth for UConn. Jordan Savinon (2 for 4, 3 RBI) had a two-run homer in the eighth for the Knights (3-4, 24-11).

 

No. 17 Maryland 10, Iowa 1

In College Park, Md., Mike Shawaryn allowed one run over eight innings with nine strikeouts as Maryland took the Big Ten series opener from Iowa. Shawaryn (8-0) gave up six hits and two walks. The Terrapins (8-2, 24-8) scored two in the second and three in the sixth before putting the game away with five in the eighth. Jose Cuas (2 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) homered, while Jamal Wade had two doubles and scored twice for Maryland. Eric Toole doubled twice and drove in one for the Hawkeyes (6-1, 21-9).

 

No. 18 Dallas Baptist 10, Bradley 3

In Dallas, Drew Turbin hit a three-run homer, and Justin Wall added a two-run shot to fuel an eight-run third inning as Dallas Baptist trumped Bradley in the MVC. Chane Lynch (3 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) also homered for the Patriots (7-3, 25-6). Ian Kristan had a two-run single, and Paul Solka added a solo homer as the Braves (2-2, 21-8) took an early 3-0 lead.

 

No. 19 Virginia 14, Georgia Tech 4

In Atlanta, Matt Thaiss had two hits and four RBI, and Pavin Smith added two hits, including a homer and three RBI, as Virginia scored seven times in the third inning en route to an ACC win over Georgia Tech. Robbie Coman went 3 for 5 with a solo homer, and Daniel Pinero added two hits, two runs and two RBI as the Cavaliers (7-9, 21-12) tallied 15 hits. A.J. Murray went 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets (7-9, 22-12).

 

No. 20 Missouri 8, Tennessee 3

In Knoxville, Tenn., Jack Klages had a three-run double, and Jake Ring ripped a three-run homer as Missouri scored six times in the fifth inning and evened its SEC series with Tennessee. Tanner Houck (6-1) worked five innings with three earned runs, and Breckin Williams closed the final 1.2 innings for his eighth save for the Tigers (9-5, 23-12). Derek Lance went 3 for 4 with a run for the Volunteers (5-9, 15-15).

 

Oregon 3, Oregon State 2

In Eugene, Ore., Oregon scored twice without getting a hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun Oregon State in the Pac-12. Trailing 2-1, Shaun Chase walked with one out, and pinch-runner J.B. Bryant moved to second when Mark Karaviotis was hit by a pitch. One out later, Austin Grebeck’s grounder was booted at second, and Bryant scored from second when the throw to first was wild for the second error on the play. After a walk to Matt Eureste, pinch-hitter Kyle Kasser walked on a 3-2 pitch to give the Ducks (3-7, 20-15) the win. Cole Irvin worked seven innings with two runs (one earned) for Oregon, while Andrew Moore allowed two hits and one run and struck out seven for the Beavers (5-5, 22-10).
