Smith pitches Texas Tech past TCU

Vandy outscores Georgia, LSU wins at Alabama, Florida tops Missouri

 

Texas Tech 5, No. 3 TCU 1

In Lubbock, Texas, Cameron Smith hurled a five-hitter as Texas Tech evened its Big 12 series with TCU. Smith (4-2) allowed two walks and one run with six strikeouts. Orlando Garcia went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI for the Red Raiders (4-4, 19-12). Dane Steinhagen went 3 for 4 with a double and one RBI for the Horned Frogs (5-3, 22-6). Preston Morrison (6-1, 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, K) suffered his first loss.

 

No. 2 Vanderbilt 9, Georgia 7

In Athens, Ga., Will Toffey drove in four to lead Vanderbilt past Georgia in the SEC series opener. Toffey had a bases-clearing double in the first and an RBI single in the fifth. Dansby Swanson went 3 for 3 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI for the Commodores (8-2, 25-6). Carson Fulmer (5-1, 6 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 7 K) earned the win, while Philip Pfeifer (3 IP, H, 2 R, 4 BB, 6 K) recorded his fourth save. Keegan McGovern had a two-run homer in the second for the Bulldogs (5-5, 18-13).

 

No. 4 LSU 6, Alabama 2

In Hoover, Ala., Kade Scivicque and Andrew Stevenson both drove in two as LSU clinched an SEC series win at Alabama. Chris Chinea went 3 for 5 and was a triple shy of the cycle for the Tigers (7-4, 26-5). Alex Lange (6-0, 6.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 5 BB, 3 K) earned the victory. Casey Hughston had three hits for the Crimson Tide (4-7, 15-14).

 

No. 5 Florida 5, Missouri 1

In Columbia, Mo., Logan Shore allowed one run over eight innings as Florida got past Reggie McClain and Missouri in the SEC. Shore (5-2) loaded the bases in the first with no outs but escaped unscathed and allowed just two hits over his final seven innings, retiring the final 13 batters he face for the Gators (6-4, 24-7). Josh Tobias went 2 for 3 with two RBI, including an RBI triple in a three-run fourth that gave Florida a 3-1 lead. Peter Alonso added two hits and two RBI, which came on a two-out double in the fifth. McClain, the three-time SEC Pitcher of the Week this season was touched for five earned runs in 5.1 innings for the Tigers (6-4, 20-11). Brett Peel went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Missouri.

 

No. 6 UCLA 4, Oregon State 1

In Los Angeles, Grant Watson turned in six scoreless innings, and Kevin Kramer had two hits, two RBI and two stolen bases as UCLA evened its Pac-12 series with Oregon State. Watson (5-2) allowed just three hits and struck out a season-high six before turning it over to the bullpen, including David Berg, who posted his seventh save for the Bruins (9-2, 22-6). UCLA did much of its damage with two outs – its first three runs and four of five came on two-out hits. Drew Rasmussen (3-2) allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings for the Beavers (5-3, 22-8). Gabe Clark had three of OSU’s five hits and scored its lone run.

 

No. 8 Florida State 1, NC State 0

In Raleigh, N.C., Drew Carlton allowed four hits in eight scoreless innings as Florida State edged NC State to claim an ACC series win. Carlton (2-1) allowed four hits and struck out four before turning it over to Billy Strode for his 10th save. The Seminoles (11-3, 25-7) scored in the first when DJ Stewart (2 for 4) scored from first when Quincy Nieporte (2 for 4) singled to right-center. Brian Brown (5-2) allowed five hits and struck out six for the Wolfpack (6-7, 18-11).

 

Utah 6, No. 9 Arizona State 5

In Salt Lake City, Kody Davis’ solo homer sparked a three-run seventh inning as Utah rallied to beat Arizona State to even their Pac-12 series. Wyatt Smith and AJ Young also had RBI in the inning as the Utes (4-7, 11-18) broke from a 2-2 game. Young finished with two RBI, and Dallas Carroll went 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI for Utah. Ryan Kellogg (5-1) suffered just his second loss in 24 career Pac-12 starts, and Johnny Sewald went 3 for 5 with two runs for the Sun Devils (8-3, 20-8).

 

Cincinnati 5, No. 10 UCF 3

In Cincinnati, R.J. Thompson had two hits and a run, and Kyle Mottice drove in two as Cincinnati topped UCF for the second straight day in the American Athletic Conference. David Orndorff (1-1) allowed three hits in 5.1 innings, and Jarod Yoakam (1.2 innings) and Andrew Zellner (2) closed with Zellner earning his second save for the Bearcats (2-3, 8-20). James Vasquez had a two-run homer for the Knights (2-3, 22-10).

 

No. 11 USC 13, Arizona 6

In Tucson, Ariz., Reggie Southall had three hits and four RBI as USC secured a Pac-12 series win at Arizona. Southall and Bobby Stahel (4 for 5, 3 R) both had two-run singles in a seven-run first for the Trojans (6-2, 24-6). Kyle Twomey (5-1, 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K) recorded the win, while Bernardo Flores (3.1 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 5 K) notched his first save. Scott Kingery went 5 for 5 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and two RBI for the Wildcats (7-4, 22-8).
