FAU, Jacksonville Get Big Wins

Nicholls knocks off LSU, Arizona State stops Oklahoma

 

FAU 5, No. 10 Miami 3

In Boca Raton, Fla., C.J. Chatham scored on a wild pitch, and Brendon Sanger’s sacrifice fly scored Stephen Kerr as FAU scored twice in the eighth to knock off Miami. Chatham, Kerr and Brett Lashley each had two hits and a run, and Ricky Santiago added two hits and an RBI for the Owls (4-0). Brandon Rhodes tossed six scoreless innings with five hits and four strikeouts for FAU, with Bo Logan earning the win with two innings of relief. Carl Chester went 2 for 5 with a solo homer and two runs for the Hurricanes (4-1).

 

Jacksonville 5, No. 17 Florida State 3

In Jacksonville, Fla., Jeff Tanner struck out eight in five solid innings after missing last season, and Jacksonville held on for its first home win over Florida State since 2009. JJ Gould had a pair of RBI, and Cameron Gibson had two hits and two runs for the Dolphins (2-2). Nathan Disch preserved the win by getting a strikeout to close the game with the tying runs on base. Danny De La Calle had two hits and an RBI for the Seminoles (3-1).

 

Nicholls State 6, No. 5 LSU 3

In Baton Rouge, La., Seth Stevens had a double, triple and two RBI, and Marc Frazier had two hits, including an RBI double that gave Nicholls State a 4-0 lead as the Colonels surprised LSU. Ryan Deemes tossed four scoreless innings with seven hits and six strikeouts to lead Nicholls (3-1) pitchers, who yielded 14 hits but stranded 17 Tigers (3-1). Mark Laird went 3 for 6 with a run for LSU.

 

No. 16 Arizona State 7, Oklahoma 4

In Phoenix, Colby Woodmansee and Brian Serven had three hits and two RBI apiece, and closer Ryan Burr set the school’s career saves record as Arizona State rallied to beat Oklahoma. The Sun Devils (3-1) scored five times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, with Woodmansee’s two-run double plating the go-ahead run. Burr posted his second save of the season and 26th of his career, breaking Doug Nurnberg’s record set in 1967. Sheldon Neuse had a three-run homer for the Sooners (3-3).

 

No. 4 Florida 12, USF 3

In Tampa, Fla., Brett Morales was perfect over six innings, and JJ Schwarz tripled, homered and drove in five as Florida beat USF. Morales struck out seven and came out after throwing 70 pitches over his six innings. Schwarz had a two-run homer in the fifth inning and added a three-run triple to key a seven-run eighth inning. Buddy Reed had three hits and two RBI, and Harrison Bader went 2 for 3 with three RBI, giving him 14 in four games for the Gators (4-0). The Bulls fell to 2-2.

 

No. 6 Houston 11, Texas Southern 5

In Houston, Kyle Survance went 3 for 4 with two RBI, and Ashford Fulmer and Corey Julks each contributed two hits and two RBI as Houston subdued Texas Southern. Taylor Cobb allowed one hit over the final four innings with five strikeouts to earn the save for the Cougars (4-0). TSU (2-3) scored four times in the first, taking advantage of a bases-loaded walk and hit batter to score two runs. Zach Howell finished 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Tigers.
