Texas Tech allowed a total of four runs in four games in going
3-1 to win the Coral Gables Regional, including a pair of
shutouts against host Miami.
Texas Tech returned to the NCAA field for the
first time since 2004 after improving its win total by 14 games
in the regular season under second-year coach Tim Tadlock, who
played for the Red Raiders under Larry Hays. The Red Raiders
reached the 40-win mark for the first time since 2004. They
started the season with a bang by taking three of four against
Indiana and they later took two of three at TCU,
both national seeds. Tyler Nelsony is slugging .614 – 20 of his
57 hits are for extra bases – and his on-base average is .476 in
39 starts. All Big 12 first-teamers Eric Gutierrez and Adam
Kirsch are the other two big sticks to watch in the order. Nine
pitchers on the staff totaled more than 25 innings, led by Chris
Sadberry’s 80. Johnny Drozd made 24 appearances (all in relief)
and ranks third on the team in innings.

Notes: The Cougars went 3-0 to win the Gainesville Regional and became the fourth No. 4 seed to win a Regional (Stony Brook in 2012, Fresno State in 2008 and Missouri in 2005). Playing its first year in the CAA after previously being a Southern Conference member, College of Charleston swept through the CAA Tournament and beat defending champ William & Mary in the title game. The Cougars made their third trip to the Regionals under Monte Lee (2010, 2012) and seventh since 2004. Lee spent six years on Ray Tanner’s staff at South Carolina and holds the distinction of being the first College of Charleston player to be selected in the Major League Draft (St. Louis, 39th round) – he hit .333 for his career and ranks sixth in school history in RBI. Brandon Murray, from the Bahamas, was injured for much of the season but is healthy again – he drove in 96 runs the previous two seasons. Leading hitter Gunnar Heidt has missed time with a hand injury. Bailey Ober is one of the best freshmen pitchers in the country and was named the CAA Rookie of the Year and first-team pitcher. Taylor Clarke is a transfer from Towson when the program was in limbo – he missed most of 2013 after Tommy John surgery.
