Notes:
Oregon
State followed up its trip to Omaha by winning the Pac-12 for
the second straight year. The Beavers have now won 40 or more
games seven times in school history, all under Pat Casey, who
guided OSU to national titles in 2006 and 2007. A year after
ranking second in the nation in ERA and WHIP, the Beavers rank
third (2.16 ERA) and sixth (1.09 WHIP). Lefties Ben Wetzler and
Jace Fry may be the best 1-2 combination in the country –
Wetzler leads the nation in ERA and opponents hit .144 off him;
Fry is 15th in ERA and tossed a no-hitter against Northern
Illinois. And then there’s Michael Conforto, one of the top
hitters in the country who ranks 34th in the nation in slugging
percentage (.588). Dylan Davis gives the Beavers another big
stick and followed up last year’s 61 RBI with 63 RBI this
season.

Notes:
UNLV fell in the MWC championship
game to San Diego State but still attained its first at-large
bid since 1989 and first NCAA tourney appearance since 2005.
Coach Tim Chambers previously coached at the College of Southern
Nevada. Ace Erick Fedde, a potential top-10 pick by Baseball
America, has missed the past few weeks and will undergo
Tommy John surgery. John Richy led the Mountain West in wins and
leads the Rebels with five complete games – his ERA has gone
from 5.93 to 4.33 to 2.78 in the past three seasons. The Rebels
played 19 games against Regional competition (7-12, including
4-5 vs. San Diego State).

58 K)
Last NCAA appearance:
2011 (3-0 at Los Angeles Regional;
1-2 at Charlottesville Super Regional)
Notes:
The Anteaters are back in the
tournament for the first time since 2011, when they were one out
from reaching Omaha but fell victim to a two-out, two-run rally
to Virginia. Coach Mike Gillespie topped the 1,000-win mark in
his 27 year-career this season – he coached USC to the 1998
national title and became only the second person (Arizona’s
Jerry Kindall) to win a national title as a player (USC, 1961)
and coach. His staff includes former Eaters stars Ben Orloff and
pitcher Danny Bibona. Due in part to its large home park, UC
Irvine thrives on pitching and defense. Don’t expect any
freebies: the Eaters rank third in the NCAA in fewest walks per
nine innings (1.99). Andrew Morales is a top-line No. 1 who
ranks 12th in the country in WHIP (0.87), and Sam Moore leads
the nation with 23 saves. With 10 homers, the Eaters ranked tied
for 244th in the country in long balls. UC Irvine dropped its
final eight conference games of the season and was considered
one of the last teams to make it into the Regionals. The Eaters
average 4.26 runs a game, among the lowest in the Regionals.
