Thornhill,
Curtiss of Texas combine to blank Vandy
In Omaha, Neb., Nathan Thornhill and John Curtiss
combined on a six-hit shutout as Texas blanked Vanderbilt in the
2014 College World Series in front of 18,287 fans at TD
Ameritrade Park.
The Longhorns (46-20) and the Commodores (48-20)
will play again on Saturday to determine one spot in the CWS
championship series.
Thornhill (9-3) scattered six hits over eight
innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Curtiss worked a
perfect ninth with one strikeout to secure the victory.
Texas scored a pair in each of the first two
innings. C.J. Hinojosa had an RBI single and Madison Carter drew
a bases-loaded walk in the first to give the Longhorns a 2-0
advantage.
Zane Gurwitz (2 for 4) had a leadoff triple in
the second and came home on a three-bagger by Brooks Marlow to
make it 3-0. Mark Payton reached on a sacrifice bunt to plate
Marlow, giving the Longhorns a 4-0 lead.
John Norwood and Tyler Campbell both had two hits
for Vanderbilt.
